== HAPPY A’NANDA PU’RN’IMA’!! ==

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Namaskar to all on this auspicious and blissful occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ – Saturday, 25 May 2013!

Wishing you a very happy and blissful occasion of devotional celebrations & merriment!!

Baba Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji is the Polestar of life: He is the inspiration, He is the sustenance, and He is the Goal. This festival day of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ marks Baba’s divine advent onto this earth.

As we know, Parama Purusa is everywhere; He is the Divine Witnessing Entity. But when humanity cannot move ahead properly on its path, when people are bewildered and do not know what to do, when right things are deemed to be wrong and wrong things are glorified up to the sky, when exploitation is rampant and all are suffering, when humanity is desperate for guidance and solutions, then at that critical hour Parama Purusa manifests Himself as Mahasambhuti. The grand occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ celebrates this holy advent.

This entire creation is the manifestation of Parama Purusa. Everyone and everything is part of our universal family. By Baba’s grace, we should always keep this sweet realisation ever alive in the heart and mind.

The final fulfillment comes when the sadhaka reaches that highest goal and feels that Baba – the Divine Entity – expresses Himself through each and everything. All are none other than the expression of the Supreme.

Wishing you, and all in your area, blissful A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ celebrations.

Here is one of Baba’s original A’nanda Va’niis that we wish to share with you – this is the one we are using in our unit.

“The fact that the fortune of every individual, not only of this earth but of the entire cosmos, has been wreathed together, will have to be admitted one day by people. The spiritual aspirant has to hasten that auspicious moment by pauseless effort, service and propagation of the great Ideology. This alone is the Supreme task for the present humanity.” (Ananda Vanii #30)

Namaskar,
Sastaunga Pranam to Baba,

== GRAND CELEBRATION OF DONKEY BIRTHDAY ==

Namaskar,
This entire letter looks at the phenomenon of various avadhutas / avadhutikas who are celebrating their worldly birthday. Such a birthday celebration is called a donkey birthday party. We have to seriously consider the appropriateness of this. Is this consistent with Ananda Marga ideological teachings or not. A listing of those involved is noted below.

INITIATION MEANS REBIRTH

Baba’s teaching that during initiation one gets re-birth. So in this situation, we should all consider & rethink the notion of celebrating one’s physical birth.

“With an initiated person the first birth was the physical birth and the second birth was the spiritual birth, during initiation. Such a person is divya, born twice: First, you are simply born as an animal being. But this second time, as a human being. So unless and until one is initiated one is not, one cannot be, treated as a human being.” (1)

Thus the physical birth does hold much value in the life of a spiritual aspirant. When they get initiated onto the path of dharma sadhana, that is their real birth – i.e. when the person gets initiated and takes shelter at Rev. Baba’s feet.

PART LIFE VS FULL LIFE

Regarding birthdays, it also has to be mentioned that our present life is nothing but a part life. It is not a full life. Our life began when our consciousness first emanated from the Cosmic Hub. Since that time we have undergone incarnation after incarnation.

“After millions of animal lives, a created being attains the human form…” (2)

“In Sanskrit, dvi means “two” and ja means “born”, so dvija means “twice born”…the first birth was the physical birth, and the second birth was the spiritual birth, during initiation.” (3)

Thus, one should not think that when the spermatozoa fertilised the egg and led to this particular birth, then that is one grand birthday event.

Our life is spiritual oriented, not goaded toward the mundane.

Thus, every sadhaka in the Marga should think twice about how far they should celebrate their “birthday”. For workers, there is no question of celebrating as they have given up everything of their unit existence for Baba. At each and every juncture or stage of an avadhuta’s development and training they are given a new name because each stage itself represents a new birth– a new beginning, all the while leaving behind their old life. In which case, where is the scope for an avadhuta to celebrate his own worldly birthday.

Indeed, all sadhakas in the Marga should take a moment and consider the points in this letter and see if really they feel it appropriate and beneficial to celebrate their own birthday.

SOME NAIVE PEOPLE MAY RAISE THIS QUESTION

Some naive persons may raise the question that when Baba has given the birthday celebration chapter in Caryacarya, then what is wrong if our avadhutas celebrate their birthday? The answer is quite clear. In Caryacarya, Baba also explains what type of meat a person should eat if they cannot resist eating meat. But that does not mean sincere sadhakas and avadhutas should also eat meat or that we should appreciate meat eating.

Remember, Caryacayra is our smrti shastra – our social code – which is not eternal. It depends upon time, space, and person. All kinds of people are coming into Ananda Marga. For some, Baba has given such rules for periods of transition onto the path of dharma.

Everyone knows that in Ananda Marga there are three types of sadhakas: pashvacariis, viiracariis, and divyacariis. Pashvacariis are half-margiis; viiracariis are mediocre sadhakas, and those who are very strict and do not compromise on points of dharma are divyacariis. There will always be a mixture of all three grades of sadhakas. Always, new people are coming into human life and they will enter onto the path of pashvacara. After many lives and with God’s grace they will one day become viiracariis.

This point of eating meat in Caryacarya is for pashvaraiis. They compromise on various aspects of 16 points, but they are also margiis. They live amongst us – we all know this and recognize who is who. A person may not openly declare, “I am a pashvcarii; I am a half-margii”, but everyone knows.

When such pashvacariis become strong, established margiis, their manner will be different. Then they will not do such things like eating meat and celebrating their birthday.

Just as meat-eating is a hindrance to those on that path of sadhana. Similarly, indulging in self-glorification – such as celebrating one’s birthday – is not conducive to one’s spiritual growth and development. Rather it is antithetical. Our spiritual philosophy condemns all forms of self-glorification.

SPIRIT OF AVADHUTA

The spirit of being Avadhuta is to dedicate everything to Marga Gurudev. By getting Avadhuta diiksa and by getting their new avadhuta name, they they no longer have anything of their own. In that blessed state, everything belongs to Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. And Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji is their mother father, & everything. That is the oath they have taken.

They surrender their all – their entire I-feeling – at His lotus feet. Their name has changed; their address has changed; their identity has changed. They have no past connection with their worldly life, nor their worldly birth. Avadhutas give everything to Parama Purusa – they have nothing left to call their own.

That is why in the conduct rules of Avadhuta, there is no such thing as the observance of one’s own birthday or any form of celebration or glorification of one’s own unit existence. Rather the avadhuta’s goal of life and the be-all end-all of their existence is to glorify Baba’s image. They are to be established solely in Marga’s Guru’s glory.

“Avadhuta shall always keep himself engaged in the service of Gurudeva with sincerity and devotion, in thought, words and deed, in subtle and in crude spheres, in inner and outer expressions of life.” (4)

In that case, there is not an iota of scope to celebrate one’s own unit birthday. Our wholetimers are to think about Him and focus on the Goal.

Tadekam’ smara’mah…Tadekam’ nidha’nam’

“That Cosmic Entity alone should be created in your mind and no other object…He is the terminating point. He is the Supreme Desideratum.” (5)

BABA’S MANDATE:

NO BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR WT

It is very well known that no Wt or avadhuta should be involved in celebrating their own birthday. That is Baba’s strict rule.

Many may recall how in the early 1970’s when Ac. Nirmohananda Avt celebrated his own birthday in Daltonganj, then Baba reprimanded him. With His great love, Baba wanted to (a) see Nirmohanandji become a sterling example and (b) set the record straight regarding proper WT conduct. So Baba sent a strong message by rebuking Nirmohananda in front of everyone. Seeing this, all workers immediately understood that they have not come on this earth to party and celebrate their own unit birthday. That is not what Baba wants.

Since then nobody asked permission from Baba to arrange the birthday celebration of any avadhuta. Nor did any acarya dare do so.

WARNING:

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION = DEGENERATION

Indeed, celebrating one’s own birthday leads to the degeneration of mind. Because by thinking of oneself the mind gets smaller and smaller.

And when thinking of oneself in a glorified way by allowing an entire gathering of people to hold a party in your honour and sing happy birthday to you by distorting Baba’s compositions of Prabhat Samgiita – which is what some of our acaryas are doing (more about this below) – then this goes against all codes of Wt conduct, etiquette, and devotional life.

Indeed this runs contrary being an Ananda Margii and disciple of the Sadguru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. Such a scene will certainly lead to one’s degeneration.

“Vanity harms the mind in three ways…The second [way] is gaorava, self-aggrandizement or boasting – projecting oneself as a great personality…. Is this really something great of which human beings can feel proud? And what is the result of this self-glorification? Raorava means the seventh hell.” (6)

Thus when some of our Wts are having the entire room sing happy birthday to them – by manipulating Baba’s Prabhat Samgiita which is meant for the arrival of Parama Purusa – and when those acaryas themselves are the guest of honour, and when everyone is there to celebrate them, then the entire event is just about their own petty I-feeling.

In that case, their degeneration is sure. As Baba warns, their destiny is the depths of hell.

THEY ARE USING BABA’S BIRTHDAY SONG FOR THEMSELVES

Now let’s critically examine how some of our Wt’s are manipulating and entwining Baba’s divine songs of Prabhat Samgiita into for the celebration of their own unit birthday.

First, our workers are not supposed to be celebrating their own birthday. This goes against the sanctity of their oaths and against the ideal of their life. They have come onto this earth for something else: To serve Parama Purusa and His creation.

Second, such Wt’s are organising birthday parties for themselves and one another and then singing Baba’s special Prabhat Samgiita #135, Janmadine…, in the honour of that worker. When in fact that song is meant to be sung to Taraka Brahma Baba and Baba only during our grand Ananda Purnima celebrations.

Yet, over the years, on multiples occasions, certain WTs have directed Baba’s beloved Prabhat Samgiita toward themselves, as if they are the focal point of this divine song and as if their worldly birthday is so important.

As we know, that entire Prabhat Samgiit #135, Janmadine…, is all about celebrating the grand arrival of Parama Purusa, yet some of our workers have begun using this divine song for themselves. They stand there and smile as a whole crowd of people sing that divine Prabhat Samgiita in their honour.

Certainly, there are many, many disciplined workers who would never stoop to such degrading activities, so we are not talking about all Wts. The tragedy is that some disgraced workers are involved in this birthday scandal – and this reflects poorly on all. A few of their names are mentioned below.

MORE ABOUT PRABHAT SAMGIITA #135

As true Ananda Margiis will recognise, in Prabhat Samgiita #135, Janmadine ei shubha ks’an’e, the entire song is directed towards Parama Purusa. It is His holy arrival that is being celebrated, not one Dada’s worldly birthday.

In the song, due to the grand arrival of Taraka Brahma, devotees are losing themselves in bliss – that is what is meant by the line, “Khusiite vibhora a’panha’ra’.

Plus, the devotees are expressing the love and joy of their heart for Parama Purusa and no one else. That is what is meant by the line, “Udvela hiya’ toma’rei la’giya'”.

Each and every syllable, line, and stanza of the song is about the grandeur of Parama Purusa and how He makes everyone’s heart dance in bliss, and how His arrival creates a new spiritual vibration that transforms the whole world, and how He has come to remain close to the bhakta.

Thus Prabhat Samgiita #135 is a very personal and devotional song that reflects a bhakta’s joy in having Parama Purusa in the mind and heart and how His arrival is completely blissful.

To sing this song in honour of one Dada’s worldly birthday goes against all ethics of devotional life. According to our standard of Ananda Marga, such an act is not only misguided but the height of hypocrisy.

It is absolutely shocking that they could even think to use Baba’s divine Prabhat Samgiita in honour of their own mundane birthday – as if they are the Saviour of this universe.

PP’s and GS’s BIRTHDAY NOT CELEBRATED

Who can say they have heard about PP Dada’s birthday or GS Dada’s birthday. The answer is no one. Because it is not done. Yet If this birthday celebration would have been accepted & approved then certainly first PP Dada’s birthday would have been celebrated every year. And then step by step GS Dada’s birthday followed by , Purodha Board members and Central Dadas etc. Like this all high posted worker would be doing. But if you examine the history of AM never has such things been done. Because it is understood that this is not approved by Baba.

THEY WERE ALSO “AVADHUTA”

How far it is appropriate & befitting for Avadhutas to celebrate their own birthday. About this, everyone can surely arrive at the answer. Who can forget that at one time Vishokananda and Madhavananda also carried the title of Avadhuta.

Thus for those who do not follow the codes and standards of being avadhuta – their title of avadhuta is meaningless. Because Baba’s guideline is that being Avadhuta in name only is not enough – one must follow the conduct and spirit.

BABA’S WARNINGS

Taking everything into consideration here following are some of Baba’s important guidelines about acarya and avadhuta life.

“A’ca’ran’a’t pa’thayati yah sah a’ca’ryah– ‘One who teaches through one’s conduct is an acarya’. If you cannot learn anything from the conduct and behaviour of a certain person, why should you accept that person as an a’ca’rya.” (7)

“Bear in mind that people may be harmed or misled by even a small weakness or defect in the conduct of an acarya…an acarya should always instruct by his exemplary actions and words.” (8)

JUST DONKEY’S BIRTHDAY

In Ananda Marga, if anything is done for superficial show or in an insincere manner then that is not at all acceptable. For instance, if someone serves you food only to show how great they are then Baba terms that food as: Donkey Food.

“If food is not offered with that heart-felt feeling then that food is donkey food, gardabha’nna. So one must not eat that food.” (9)

Similarly sadhana done with the primary motive of showing one’s greatness instead of pleasing Parama Purusa is donkey sadhana. And if kiirtan is sung with the primary motive as a display of one’s musical talent and instead of to spread the glory of the Lord, then that is donkey kiirtan.

Likewise, when any Wt or avadhuta celebrated their own birthday in their honour instead of spreading the glory of Parama Puruas, then their celebration is a donkey birthday.

SOME FAKE AVADHUTAS INVOLVED IN BIRTHDAY ANTICS

About any such cases where Wts go against their own code of conduct – by celebrating their worldly birthday etc – Baba has given the following teaching:

“Mana na’ ra’inga’ile ra’inga’ile yogii kapar’a.

Saffron and red do not a yogiis make
With mind undyed he remains a fake.”

“Dye your mind with His colour. Those who have not done so cannot attain Him, for this very coloration is Prema or Divine Love… No external sign of Sa’dhuta’ or virtue is necessary. Become sa’dhu within. Behind the external show of virtuousness of many so-called sa’dhus exists a pharisaic state of mind. Preserve the true dignity of the word, Sa’dhu.”

“Mu’r’ha mura’ye jata’ bar’a’ye…

With shaven head or matted locks
And ashen body a Sadhu walks
With the swaggering gait of a well-fed buffalo.
And crude mind filled with thoughts mean and low.”

“That is why I say that you must bring about a revolutionary change in the flow of your judgment and thought, and see how, after overcoming your fascination with external colour, your mind becomes tinged with the His glorious colour.” (10)

(A) Some time back in Jharsguda (Orissa, India), there was a big birthday party event held in honour of of so-called Dada Priyakrsnananda.

For those not aware, Dada Priyakrsnananda has years and years of experience in AM and even in his early years in the Marga he was a Central Worker who lived close to Baba. But unfortunately, those years he was like a rock in a river. Just as the water never touches the inside of the rock despite the rock being immersed in the river, similarly Priyakrsnananda Dada was very close to Baba physically for many years, but internally he was not drenched. Or what can say.

Perhaps most surprising is that there were many, many so-called senior workers on hand for this birthday gala event and in one big round, they all sang Prabhat Samgiita #135, “Janma dine…”, in order to celebrate Priyakrsnananda’s birthday.

This type of dogmatic occasion is 100% against the ethics of our Ananda Marga and it sets a very negative example.

(B) Not surprisingly then, more recently in SUVA sector, the very so-called senior Dada Paramatmananda and so-called Didi Ananda Shamiita organised two birthday parties. And once again, they both insisted that PS #135, “Janma dine…”, be sung. Thus with printed song sheets etc that Dada and Didi made sure that the birthday event was celebrated with Prabhat Samgiita.

Our so-called senior most workers do not understand the basic principles about Ananda Marga and Prabhat Samgiita. They have forgotten Guru’s teachings and guidelines.

(C) Some years ago at New York sector’s Boston Regional retreat, Ac. Rainjitananda Avt celebrated his own birthday with full gusto and glory. In grand fashion, everyone present at the retreat sang a hearty round of the traditional American “Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You” song in so-called Dadaji’s honor. And during the singing one sumptuous cake was brought out and served to so-called Dadaji. And like that the whole affair took on the flavor of one mundane Americana birthday party whereby non-margiis make a wish for mundane objects as they blow out the candles on the birthday cake and receive presents from one and all etc. So like that Rainjitanandji’s celebratory occasion and birthday party was carried out whereby Dada accepted the card and cake and all arrangements in his own honour. Because at that moment so-called Dadaji’s birthday was the showcase event going on at the retreat.

(D) Didi Ananda Kalyanshrii has also been involved in grand birthday celebrations. This Didi who used to be DSL Delhi and then became SWWS Delhi had big birthday celebrations where all her children’s home kids would sing for her. Actually this Didi has a long history of self-glorification as she is involved in movie-making and videography and is not shy about putting herself on film etc. Now she is posted as SWWS Hong Kong Sector. All recall how Didi celebrated her birthday with much pomp and show.

(E) Here is a list of more Wt Dadas and Wt Didis who use Prabhat Samgiita to celebrate themeselves on their worldly birthday – plus they accept and receive presents as well. Please forward this letter to them so they are aware about this matter

Didi Ananda Vibha
Didi Ananda Anuprabha
Didi Ananda Advaya
Didi Ananda Usa
Didi Ananda Hitesana
Didi Ananda Danavrata
Didi Ananda Avisha
Didi Ananda Arundhati
Didi Ananda Sudha

Dada Priyakrsnananda
Dada Rathindrananda
Dada Nirmohananda

And there are more…

First please forward this letter to the aforementioned Wts. Second, write us if you have seen other Wt Dadas or Didis doing like this type of donkey birthday.

CONCLUSION

The sole reason for writing this letter and addressing this issue is to help those Wts rectify their conduct and improve the overall standard of our Wt cadre. If this problem is not solved, then some of the newer Wts many also adopt this birthday ritual and prolong the dogma. Yet we should not let this problem mount. We must also bear in mind that many Wts – new and old – do not support these Wt birthday celebrations yet they are not in position to rectify the matter. Whatever the circumstance, as Ananda Margiis it is our duty to bring this issue to the fore so it can be properly addressed and resolved.

Namaskar,
at His lotus feet,
Nityanirainjan Deva

== CELEBRATING A’NANDA PU’RN’IMA’ ==

Note: At the bottom of this letter are links to 4 in-depth letters about wonderful ways to honour and celebrate the grand occasion of Ananda Purnima. In addition this letter provided us with a spiritual outlook for this festival. Please write in with your thoughts.

Namaskar,

One of the most wonderful days of the year for Ananda Margiis all across the globe is Ananda Purnima. This is perhaps the most joyous and charming festival that we have. For this is the time when our Beloved Baba has taken the vow to come on this earth as Mahasambhuti and shower us in His divine love. Ananda Purnima marks the occasion when He has taken the firm determination to infuse dynamism into our individual and

collective bodies. It is the time when He has graciously come and made the world new all over again by bestowing upon us a new ideology and a new way of living.

In turn, it is also a time – a day – when we should remember His divine teachings of Átmamokśárthaḿ jagaddhitáya ca, liberation of self and service to society.

We should all strive to serve and please Him and incorporate more of Ananda Marga values and practices into our own lives. Whatever shortcomings we may have in personal life, we should aim to weed out those faults and take the samkalpa to become more strict in 16 Points etc.

Our philosophy is not to wait for certain days to start doing good work, so whenever the desire comes one should move ahead. But on this auspicious day we must do self-analysis and think what is lagging in our personal conduct and spiritual life and pointedly decide to improve our adherence to spiritual ideals and practices.

On Ananda Purnima we should take this blessed task upon ourselves. Human life is short so we should not be slack in any respects about yama and niyama and 16 Points.

These are some of the very blissful and practical ways to think about our Ananda Purnima festival. And as we all know this most charming festival is now upon us,

Tuesday, May 17.

A TIME TO SHAKE OFF THE OLD

As we live our lives, there is a tendency for things to become dreary and boring. It can happen to anyone. Because as colouful and exciting as this world is, still we get bogged down in our daily routines: Go to work; come home from work; wash the clothes; fold the clothes; pay the bills; check the email; attend to our appointments etc. Indeed, if we are not careful even our sadhana can become rote and mechanical. In that way, it can seem like we are doing the same thing day in and day out.

Firstly then this magnificent festival day of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima is a time to rid life of any dreary quality and invite a sense of wonder and vitality. That is one of main characteristics of our festivals (utsava) in Ananda Marga.

Baba says, “People often feel bored with their humdrum lives, with their mechanical routines; thus a fresh start must be created through [utsava] festivals…“Ut” means “above” and “sava” means “[[to take]] birth”; so utsava means “an occasion which gives human beings fresh inspiration to live a new life.” When people become tired and uninspired, when they can no longer look towards the future with hope, when their colourful dreams are shattered, at that time the sweetness of a festival brings new joy

and vigour in life. Thus in individual and collective life, the importance of festivals is tremendous. One should always remember that festivals should be such that all can take part in them without any ostentatious display of wealth, and with an upsurge of their life force. And these festivals should be conducted in such a way that people take

part in them from a spontaneous inner urge. I hope that you will make such arrangements so that all are attracted towards your festivals which will be more and more charming – and this will bring about your collective welfare.” (AFPS-5)

Thus, this coming day of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ is a time to break the cyclic repetition of mundane life and bring in an entire new freshness to our existence.

OUR SAMKALPA ON A’NANDA PU’RNIMA’

Second, we can think of this day of Ananda Pu’rn’ima’ as a time to take a firm commitment to move ahead in our spiritual lives. Just as Baba has blessed us by taking the firm determination of coming into this world as Mahasambhuti; similarly, we should commit to doing something more – i.e. increasing our adherence – for our spiritual lives and His mission. Let this be our samkalpa on this day of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’.

Because as we know, human life is an on going endeavour from imperfection to perfection. It is the fight between avidya maya and vidya maya– both in our individual and collective lives. So we have to expedite our speed.

Being on the spiritual path, this fight becomes even more stark. Either we are falling prey to the allurements of this quinquelemental world or we are advancing on the path of spiritual realisation. Each and every moment of our lives this is happening.

So this festival of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ is a time for us to evaluate our course and commit to incorporating more of His divine ideas into our lives. This is the duty of each and every sadhaka. It is a time for us to leave our shortcomings behind and move forward on the divine path.

That is another way to think of this wonderful occasion of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’.

BABA’S BLESSING

By Baba’s grace He has lovingly brought us onto the path of realisation and service; He has infused within us the desire to do something great in life. As His disciples, on this holy day of A’nanda Pu’rnima’, we should take the samkalpa to live a life that is full of His Sixteen Points– overcoming all degrading tendencies– and become true mediums of His teachings.

Here is one Ananda Vanii to reflect upon on this most blissful day of A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’

Baba says, “The more the honest people are firm on morality, the more the evil forces will be active against them. So all the moralists of the universe should remain organized and confront the evil forces unitedly.” (Ananda Vanii #59)

Happy Ananda Pu’rn’ima’ to all my brothers and sisters of the Marga!

Baba is so gracious!

Namaskar,

Mahesh

Note 1: WHAT TYPE OF SAMKALPA SHOULD I TAKE

On this coming A’nanda Pu’rn’ima’ day, we may ask ourselves, ‘What type of samkalpa should I take?’. I discussed this with my Dada and this is how he explained it to me:

Our samkalpas will be based on blessedness and benevolence– on how to bring

more of His teachings of Sixteen Points into our lives. So the overall theme of all of our vows will be the same, yet they may take different from one sadhaka to the next. For some who are not so strict in fasting, then this may be a time to commit to that practice. For those who need to be more regular in their asana practice, they might commit more to that. Depending on the person, the vow may take a different shape– a different form. But in spirit, the vow will be the same: To please Baba by further advancing along the path of spirituality, by His grace and His grace alone. Surely we will be successful.

Baba

== EASIEST WAY TO GET BABA’S BLESSING ==

Namaskar,

With the planning for Ananda Purnima celebrations in full-swing, everyone should be critically aware about the contents of this email.

Adhering to 16 Points is very difficult; fortunately however there is no need to pay

heed to these rules to get moksa.

If you have money, then each year you should purchase a huge quantity of firecrackers for Baba’s birthday – that will bring you to your cherished Goal. And if you do not have sufficient funds then collect money from others and purchase fireworks. Thus on Ananda Purnima, you can create a huge noise and pollute the whole area.

If any margii does not want to give you money then demoralise them. Tell them that they do not have love for Baba and that they are non-margiis or secret agents of the enemy.

Utterly disregard whatever is written in Caryacarya part 1 regarding Ananda Purnima such as feeding the poor, hosting a medical camp, helping patients, or serving the needy. One need not do those things. Those are all outdated ideas.

Plus, if anybody is trying to do those things then discourage them.

Inspire all that shooting off fireworks is the easiest, quickest and smartest way to gain access to Baba’s grace and virtue.

A COPY OF MUSLIM DOGMA

Blasting fireworks (aka firecrackers) has become notorioulsy famous in the Marga of late as Dadas are copying such rituals from the Muslim world:

http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/featured_articles/20001220wednesday.html

So just as certain Dadas created the dogmatic Mahaprayan program by copying the Islamic ritual of Ajmer Sharif (read this posting), now a similar trend is underway with regards to Ananda Purnima. That means copy the way Muslims celebrate their dogmatic festivals by shooting off fireworks.

By the firecrackers booming in the air, and the plumes of smoke rising up and spreading all around, the noise (& smoke) will resonate all the way up to heaven. It will reach Baba. He will listen and become satiated. Ultimately He will bless. That is the way it works.

HERE’S HOW TO CELEBRATE

In this upcoming – May 17 – Ananda Purnima program of 2011, a huge blasting of fireworks is needed. This is the 90th birthday, so in order to please Him, 90,000 big firecrackers are needed. That means one thousand for each year.

Regarding the purchase of such firecrackers, do not worry about how much you spend- spend as much as you can and take loan if necessary.

Let there be a competition between dadas & didis, margiis & avadhutas, acaryas & tattvikas, males & females, all should be involved. See who can put on the the biggest fireworks show. Inspire everyone to purchase at least $50,000 for their unit; prizes should be awarded.

FORGET ABOUT DOING SOCIAL SERVICE

All other social service projects like a children’s home, schools or relief, are totally secondary. The fireworks show will be the top project – that will get top billing. And if anybody does not cooperate, then punish them.

It is not a joke – this is exactly what is going on in so many units – especially in Ranchi HQ and other places.

According to Baba’s teachings, our AM slogan stands for: Liberation of self and service to humanity.

Liberation of self means doing sadhana and following 16 Pts; and service to humanity means rendering selfless service.

But unfortunately that is not the priority these days. Group leaders are instead copying the dogmatic religions. Shooting off fireworks is a mirror image of Islamic namaz on occasions like Eid / Ramadan etc. While performing namaz they create as much noise as they can.

Now see what is going on in the Marga.

Ranchi leaders and others have made the system that on Baba’s upcoming

90th birthday, one has to shoot off firecrackers – and with each passing year, the number of fireworks and noise increases. Just add one more every year or more. Some now purchase firecrackers in large groups – by this way it will grow and grow and grow. After 2000 years, margiis will be forced to explode 2,000,000

firecrackers or more.

And when millions will be Ananda Margiis then you can imagine the situation on this planet. Everywhere there will be firecrackers and what about the pollution (air and land) they make.

Some people are commenting about global warming, and worrying about noise and and air pollution – just laugh at them. Just mock and demoralise them as being outdated.

In the future, some radical margiis will explode bombs in order to make a huge sound and gain quick grace and moksa. As a result, unfortunately many will lose their hearing, be exposed to fires & even undergo death. Indeed at last year’s Ananda Purnima celebration in Ranchi, the pandal caught fire. The whole area was so polluted it was hard to breathe.

During the last Ananda Purnima celebration, one big firecracker cost 4000RS which is the amount one laborer earns while working full-time for months. DPS Dada did not do social service rather he spent all the money on firecrackers. That is why the food prepared in daytime was eaten in the evening as well, because there was no money for fresh food in evening due to the high cost of the fireworks. And this is in the summer season where the food gets stale very quickly.

So we should see what happens this year – be ready.

MANY, MANY INJURIES

This coming Ananda Purnima – unfortunately – many AM children may suffer burns,

injuries, hearing loss & eardrum damage, and even hospitalisation.

Indeed, last time one margii got hospitalised and suffered permanent hearing loss and

ongoing pain.

And there is a dangerous history associated with firecrackers where people of all ages lose their limbs, vision, and so much more.

THE CURRENT SITUATION – RESOLUTION NEEDED

At present, the whole society is suffering from air pollution yet side by side the vanguards of humanity are polluting and encouraging others to pollute the environment by their grandiose fireworks displays on Ananda Purnima. There is a veritable competition between one group and the next, one jagrti and the next, one wt and the next etc.

In place of this type of dogmatic and stupid competition, there should be competitions in 16 Points, serving society and doing sadhana. That is how to celebrate Ananda Purnima.

Baba says, “There are still others who think that they can attain salvation by worshipping Parama Puruśa in a ritualistic manner by ringing bells or lighting candles, or offering flowers. No, they will also meet with equal failure because they are mere slaves of mechanical rituals [and doing fireworks]. By following such rituals these people become bound within hard and fast routine activities. At a particular time they will light candles, ring bells, clean plates, offer flowers to the deity etc.; and in actuality as their whole attention is diverted to those mechanical activities, their cosmic ideation is completely forgotten.” (Subhasita Samhgraha, part 11, The Path of Salvation)

Now we have to think how we can solve this problem.

Namaskar,

Girish

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

“Maner kon’e samgopane ke go tumi base ekela’…” (P.S. 3529)

Purport:

O’ divine Entity, by secretly sitting alone in the remote corner of my

mind, You are vibrating my mind and heart– my whole existence– in

divine ecstasy. Please tell me who are You. Neither do You share the

feelings of Your heart with me so I do not know what is Your desire. And

when I ask You what You want, then You tell that You do not want

anything. Just with Your charming smile You are showering sweet nectar

like a garland of pearls.

O’ Supreme Personality, please tell me, are You alone? Have You no

companion? Are You searching for someone? Is that the reason why You are

always wandering around this entire universe in all the ten directions–

because You are searching for some companionship. Is that why You are

busy enjoying Your divine liila in this bottomless and endless, mobile

and immobile world– i.e. in Your entire creation.

O’ Divine Entity, of all the bhavas You are Mahabhava. You are the

quintessence of all thoughts and ideations– the ultimate Goal of all

the samadhis. O’ Supreme One You are complete unto Yourself and

infinite. You do not have any shortage or dearth of anything; You have

everything. You control the unit as well as the vast– everything. You

go on creating Your liila in hundreds of ways and flows. Your grandeur

is infinite & endless.

O’ divine One, who is most charming and attractive, please grace me by

revealing Your identity. You have captivated me by Your causeless grace

and by the infinite bond of Your divine love…

Health Guideline: Sleeping Related

“Do not sleep on a soft bed.” (CC-3, Chap 6, Pt #4)

Note: This above point that Baba is describing has deep meaning. Some

ignorant people however who are unaware about health and hygiene get

swayed by pseudo-culture and they use a spring-loaded bed with thick

mattresses. But that is very detrimental for the various joints,

muscles, & organs of the body and it creates an ill-effect on the body

systems such as digestive disorders & diseases. Mostly because of

hunchback syndrome and because the stomach is pressed. Keeping this

view, including many more benefits, Baba has graciously introduced this

above rule. Everyone should follow this and then they will realise the

deeper aspect of its value.

Amongst conscious people it is commonly known that soft beds lead to the

onset of many diseases including incurable backaches and joint pain.

So one should be aware. One should not fall in the trap of momentary

pleasure and invite more dangerous diseases.

Note 2: Revealing the spiritual significance of this point, Baba guides

us that those who are using a hard bed in day to day life, their body

becomes more and more capable for intense psycho-spiritual practice.

Such sincere sadhakas keep away from using a pillow also.

Baba

“D’eke ja’i sa’r’a’ na’ pa’i, e ki kat’hin hrdaya…” (P.S. 3184)

Purport:

Baba, I go on calling You, but I never get any response. Your heart is
tough. You do not care about my longing; that is why You never respond.
Sometimes You come close and sometimes You go on smiling, keeping Yourself
distant. What type of drama or divine play is this.
With the melody and rhythm of the dance, You go on floating like a tidal
wave in the ocean. In all the ups and downs of Your various vibrations I
always feel Your sweetness.
Baba, in all the ages You are; You remain all the time; You never get
lost. You are also present in those memories which have already faded away.
There also You are. You are ever-present in the nucleus of everything,
manifested or not manifested. Everything is saturated with Your love, Your
grace. Baba, You love me and You want to listen to my call again and again,
that is why You do not respond. This is one way of Your loving expression.
Baba, I surrender everything unto You…

== OWL’S BIRTHDAY ==
Note: At the bottom of this letter are links to more important letters on this topic.

Namaskar,
A critical event and recurring issue demands our full attention,
especially in the wake of recent events.

We all understand that everything Baba has given is sacred, including
our WT system and His divine collection of Prabhat Samgiita.

Yet now, in recurring birthday bashes, both of these gifts are being
misused, nay abused.

Please read the following; see what is going on; and find out which
acaryas are involved.

Collectively, by raising awareness, together we can put a stop to such
shenanigans that undermine the sanctity of Baba’s ideological teachings
and devotional treasures.

BABA’S MANDATE:

NO BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR WT

Since a number of Wts have jumped on the birthday party bandwagon, we
need to examine the issue from various aspects.

First off, let’s just make it clear that no Wt or avadhuta should be
involved in celebrating their own birthday. That is Baba’s strict rule.

Many will recall that in the early 1970’s when Nirmohanananda celebrated
his own birthday in Daltonganj, then Baba reprimanded Dada severely. Out
of His great love, Baba wanted to set the record straight regarding
proper WT conduct. So He sent a strong message by rebuking
Nirmohanananda, in front of everyone.

Seeing this all workers immediately understood that they have not come
on this earth to party and celebrate their own crude birthday. That is
not what Baba wants.

Our wholetimers are to think about Him and focus on the Goal.

Tadekam’ smara’mah…Tadekam’ nidha’nam’

Baba says, “That Cosmic Entity alone should be created in your mind and
no other object…He is the terminating point. He is the Supreme
Desideratum.” (AV-2)

WARNING:

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION = DEGENERATION

Indeed, celebrating one’s own birthday leads to the degeneration of
mind. Because by thinking of oneself the mind gets smaller and smaller.

And when thinking of oneself in a glorified way by allowing an entire
gathering of people to hold a party in your honour and sing happy
birthday to you by distorting Baba’s compositions of Prabhat Samgiita –
which is what some of our acaryas are doing – then this goes against all
codes of Wt conduct and etiquette.

Indeed this flies in the face of being an Ananda Margii and disciple of
the Sadguru Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji. Such a scene will certainly lead
to one’s degeneration.

Baba says, “Vanity harms the mind in three ways…The second [way] is
gaorava, self-aggrandizement or boasting – projecting oneself as a great
personality…. Is this really something great of which human beings can
feel proud? And what is the result of this self-glorification? Raorava
means the seventh hell.” (AMIWL-11)

Thus when some of our Wts are having the entire room sing happy birthday
to them – by manipulating Baba’s Prabhat Samgiita which is meant for the
arrival of Parama Purusa – and when those acaryas themselves are the
guest of honor, and when everyone is there to celebrate them, then the
entire event is just about puffing up their petty I-feeling.

In that case, their degeneration is sure. As Baba warns, their destiny is
the depths of hell.

SHEER AUDACITY:

HOW THEY ARE CELEBRATING

Now lets critically examine how some of our Wt’s are manipulating and
entwining Baba’s divine songs of Prabhat Samgiita into their misguided
birthday bashes (i.e. parties).

First, our workers are not supposed to be celebrating their own crude
birthday. They have come onto this earth for something else. That is now
well understood.

Second, such Wt’s are organising birthday parties for themselves and one
another and then singing Baba’s special Prabhat Samgiita, Janmadine…
#135, in the honour of that worker. When in fact that song is meant to
be sung to Baba and Baba only during our Ananda Purnima celebrations.

That’s right, you read the above paragraph properly. Your eyes are not
deceiving you.

On not one, but rather on multiples occasions, certain WTs have directed
Baba’s beloved Prabhat Samgiita toward themselves, as if they are so
great and their mundane birthday is so special.

Such is their audacity.

That entire Prabhat Samgiit, Janmadine…#135, is all about celebrating
the grand arrival of Parama Purusa, yet some of our workers have the
gall to redirect this divine song unto themselves. And they stand there
and smile as a whole crowd of people are singing that divine Prabhat
Samgiita in their honour.

Can you imagine such a thing? Such is the lowly standard to which a few
of our workers have fallen.

Of course, there are many disciplined workers who would never stoop to
such degrading activities, so we are not talking about all Wts.

The tragedy is that some of our senior and top workers are involved in
this birthday scandal. A few of their names are mentioned below.

MORE ABOUT PRABHAT SAMGIITA #135

As true Ananda Margii will recognise, in Prabhat Samgiita #135,
Janmadine ei shubha ks’an’e, the entire song is directed towards Parama
Purusa. It is His holy arrival that is being celebrated, not one Dada’s
mundane birthday.

In the song, due to the grand arrival of Taraka Brahma, devotees are
losing themselves in bliss – that is what is meant by the line,
“Khusiite vibhora a’panha’ra’.

Plus, the devotees are expressing the love and joy of their heart for
Parama Purusa and no one else. That is what is meant by the line,
“Udvela hiya’ toma’rei la’giya'”.

Each and every syllable, line, and stanza of the song is about the
grandeur of Parama Purusa and how He makes everyone’s heart dance in
bliss, and how His arrival creates a new spiritual vibration that
transforms the whole world, and how He has come to remain close to me.

Thus Prabhat Samgiita #135 is a very personal and devotional song that
reflects a bhakta’s joy in having Parama Purusa in the mind and heart
and how His arrival is totally blissful.

Thus to sing this song in honour of one Dada’s crude birthday goes
against all ethics of devotional life. To speak frankly, according to
our standard of Ananda Marga, such an act is not only misguided but
criminal.

After all, we are not talking about a primary school student. We are
talking about our esteemed acaryas who have been on the path for decades
and been in hundreds of reporting sessions with Baba. These Dadas are
not innocent babies. They have been educated and trained about AM and
Baba’s teachings.

They should know better and set a better example to others.

So it is absolutely shocking that they could even think to use Baba’s
divine Prabhat Samgiita in honour of their own mundane birthday – as if
they are the Saviour of this universe. Either such a Dada is just plain
ignorant, dumb, and devotionally blind, or they have an ego the size of
the Himalayas.

In either case the situation is not at all good – and their future is
not at all bright.

BABA’S ORDER:

MUST NOT GLORIFY ONESELF

Here Baba is clearly warning that human beings, let alone our esteemed
acaryas, must not be involved in self-glorification by holding birthday
parties and singing songs of their own greatness. One must not do such
things.

Baba says, “Kiirtana should be done on Hari and on no other entity. One
should not praise oneself or any other person. There are many people who
are very fond of praising themselves by telling everyone what wonderful
things they have done, but, as mentioned in this sloka, kiirtana is not
for one’s own self but for Hari. Even though people are taught to do
kiirtana for Hari, they still make the mistake of praising themselves
too much. Sometimes their self-praise is so intense that others are
obliged to say, “Please stop praising yourself so much.” They forget
that their self-applause is rather boring for others. Human beings
should realize that no one likes to hear the self-praise of others.” (AV-8)

Even though a few degraded workers may enjoy the crude display of their
own petty glory, such ostentatious displays are not received well in the
society. This will tarnish the image of all workers who have come on
this earth to selflessly serve others, not glorify themselves.

BABA’S BLESSING

By Baba’s grace we are to become great by our spiritual and selfless
conduct, not by the pomp and show of our birthday bashes.

Baba says, “It is action that makes a person great. Be great by your
sa’dhana’, by your service, by your sacrifice.”

For a Wt to celebrate their own birthday using Prabhat Samgiitas is
nothing but of a function of their own blindness. That is why many say
this is just one owl’s birthday.

Namaskar,
Mahendra

Note 1: PART LIFE VS FULL LIFE

Regarding birthdays, it has to be mentioned that our present life is
nothing but a part life. It is not a full life. Our life began when our
consciousness first emanated from the Cosmic Hub. Since that time we
have undergone incarnation after incarnation.

Baba says, ” After millions of animal lives, a created being attains the
human form…” (Ananda Va’nii #33)

Baba says, “In Sanskrit, dvi means “two” and ja means “born”, so dvija
means “twice born”…the first birth was the physical birth, and the
second birth was the spiritual birth, during initiation.” (AV-30)

Thus, one should not think that when the spermatoza fertilised the egg
that led to this particular birth is one grand birthday event.

Our life is spiritual oriented, not goaded toward the mundane.

Thus, every sadhaka in the Marga should think twice about how far they
should celebrate their “birthday”. For workers, there is no question of
celebrating as they have given up everything of their unit existence for
Baba. But all sadhakas in the Marga should take a moment and consider
the points in this letter and see if really they feel it appropriate and
beneficial to celebrate their own birthday.

Of course with young kids it is a different matter – they should
celebrate – but advanced sadhakas should rethink this issue with regards
to themselves. Already, probably many do not celebrate as they are more
interested in Parama Purusa.

Note 2: IN CARYACARYA BUT NOT FOR THEM

In Caryacarya, Baba has given all kinds of ceremonies for the general
society, including birthday celebrations (without Prabhat Samgiita of
course!). But no acarya should blindly think that therefore that
birthday celebration is for them anymore than they should think that the
marriage ceremony is for them. Those types of things in Caryacarya are
for the general society, not our esteemed acaryas.

Note 3: WHO IS INVOLVED IN THESE BIRTHDAY ANTICS

On 29 August 2009, in Jharsguda (Orissa, India), there was a big
birthday party event held in honour of Dada Priyakrsnananda.

For those not aware, Dada Priyakrsnananda has years and years of
experience in AM and even in his early years in the Marga he was a
Central Worker who lived close to Baba. Thus he should really know better.

Perhaps most surprising is that there were many, many senior workers on
hand for this birthday gala event and in one big round, they all sang
Prabhat Samgiita #135, “Janma dine…”, in order to celebrate
Priyakrsnananda’s birthday.

This type of dogmatic thing is totally against the ethics of our Marga
and it sets a very negative example. Because, as we all know, dogma
spreads.

Not surprisingly then, more recently in SUVA sector, the very senior
Dada Paramatmananda and Didi Ananda Shamiita organised two birthday
parties. And once again, they both insisted that PS #135, “Janma
dine…”, be sung. Thus with printed song sheets etc that Dada and Didi
made sure that the birthday event was celebrated with Prabhat Samgiita.

So this ugly trend is quickly making its way around the world. It is
such a tragedy that even our senior most workers do not understand basic
principles about AM and Prabhat Samgiita. It is amazing how quickly they
have forgotten Guru’s teachings and guidelines.

Note 4: THIS DADA ALSO CELEBRATED HIS BIRTHDAY

Here is a letter about a past birthday events regarding our acaryas.
These letters are filled with stories, explanations, and insights about
this critical issue.

Health Guideline

Baba says, “A’pashcavishvabhes’ajii– that is ‘water is medicine for all
diseases’. Truly, all types of disease can be relieved if one knows how to
use water properly. To maintain the internal functions of the body without
hindrance and to maintain the internal liquid balance, everyone should
drink a sufficient quantity of water every day. A healthy person can
consume three or four seers of water a day, a sick person four or five
seers, and a person suffering from skin disease, five or six seers. These
amounts of water help cure disease to a great extent.”
“Drinking water is good, but water with a little lemon and a little
salt is still better.”
“Drinking a lot of water at a time is harmful, especially for heart
patients.” (YT, ’96, p. 93)

Note: During meals if people drink water or juice etc then the saliva gets
diluted thus adversely affecting digestion and inviting many diseases.
