== FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH– III ==

Namaskar,

As we all know fasting is special practice whereby one’s entire system gets

cleansed and purified. Because by allowing the organs to rest and collect

the toxins, the body gets the opportunity to rejuvenate itself. And of

course, breaking the fast properly with a thorough cleansing process is an

indispensable feature of fasting– otherwise much of the benefits are lost.

So by doing the whole fasting and breaking in a sincere and complete manner

then an innumerable amount of “health and wealth” is aroused in the human

structure such that the body and mind glisten with purity and lightness.

BABA WATCHES FOR OUR WELFARE

That is why we all know that Baba Himself is very strict with all margiis

and acaryas on the point of fasting. He wants that we should derive all the

many benefits from this great practice. Indeed, in multiple ways He reminds us

that always He is watching. This following teaching is leading in that

exact manner.

Baba says, “Suppose, a gentleman is undergoing fasting, and secretly in a

closed room, he takes chocolate. ‘No one will know, nobody will know.’ But

it is not so. His unit cognition will know that he has taken chocolate. And

similarly, the Cosmic Father will know that in a particular room one unit

body took chocolate very secretly, and that unit body is still thinking,

that the fact that he took chocolate on a fast-day is not known to anybody.

It is known to everybody. Nothing is a secret.” (AV-12)

Hence Baba is acutely aware of exactly what happens– as well as what does

not happen– on our each and every fasting day. And He wants that we

sincerely follow His guideline as this is for our welfare.

BABA POINTS OUT

That is why in dharma samiiksa and in all types of reporting sessions, Baba

used to point out sadhakas on the point of fasting in front of one and all.

And if one person got pointed out it was understood that if others are also

falling into this same category then they should also rectify themselves.

That was the spirit. It was not just that Baba was speaking to only one

individual on such occasions.

Some people would wonder why Baba was pointing out margiis or Wts in front

of the collective, as opposed to informing them individually. And surely

the reason for this is that Baba did not have the time to speak to each and

every individual on each and every particular point. So by highlighting a

particular sadhaka’s mistake in public, then if 4 or 5 others were doing

the same wrongdoing then naturally they would get also alarmed. And the

feeling would come that they too should rectify themselves. As they

understood that Baba is very concerned and strict on this point.

Plus, another reason is that naming the defects on the public platform was

a good way of reminding one and all. Because day after day or every few

days if He was pointing out a different margii or Wt on the point of

fasting, then it automatically became a reminder to all those present that

this was something important. So if anyone was attending the reporting for

an entire week or two week period, then numerous reminders they would get.

And invariably they would spread that idea to others who did not attend.

Here we should keep in ming that as Guru Baba was pointing out the defects

of disciples from the very beginning, not just in later years. From the Jamalpur

era up to the grand DMCs in the late 80’s, Babe would point out, beat, and His

shower love. This was all done for our welfare. By this way we could grow and move on

towrards Suprem fulfillment. Baba is the dharma Guru and His special quality is to

both love and punish.

Baba says, “The preceptor must also be nigraha (capable of inflicting punishment)

and anugraha (capable of bestowing grace). One who punishes only or who bestows

grace only is not an ideal preceptor.” (ANIWL-9)

WHY POINT OUT IN PUBLIC

Hence overall there were at minimum two distinct reasons for pointing

people out in front of the collective: lack of time to speak to everyone on

an individual basis and by this way it was a good reminder to one and all.

Thus within a short period Baba could rectify and instill proper practices

within countless sadhakas within the entire Marga. Overall we can say it

was His special technique and blessing.

And surely every Margii and Wt will readily admit that Baba is very strict

on the point of fasting. And He wants that we should all be sincere on this

very point. As He tells us again and again in various ways that indeed He

is always watching our each and every action to ensure our welfare.

I hope others will also come forward and share their experiences on this

very topic.

BABA’S BLESSING

Here following is Baba’s Blessing:

Baba says, “You boys and you girls do you realise why you were born? You

were born to do something to please Parama Purusa. Always move towards

Parama Purusa through your actions, through your thoughts, through your

contemplation, and your goal will be attained, your purpose in coming to

this world will be fulfilled.” (SS-18)

Namaskar,

Satyanarayan Deva

OUR SANSKRIT NAMES

Baba says, “At the time of initiation or shortly afterwards, those who do not

have a Sanskrit name should be given one by the ácárya/á. The word deva should

be suffixed to the name…the more the usage of deva as a title, the better it

is. The Sanskrit name should be used in all worldly dealings.” (Caryacarya-1)

BREAKING THE FAST ITSELF– A “HOW TO” PROCESS

1. First mix 1/4 piece of lemon or lime with some salt in a dry container–

preferably a plastic or ceramic container, but not metal.

2. Then add 1/2 litre to 1 litre of warm water and stir.

3. The lemon salt water mixture should be distinctly salty to taste– but

not overly salty.

4. If your mixture is not sufficiently salty then little by little more can

be added. And if really it is already too salty then simply dilute your

mixture by adding more warm water.

5. Then one should begin to drink this lemon salt water. Not in one gulp

per se, but in a series of comfortable sips and swallows over the course of

a few minutes, without bloating the stomach. But one should not take too

much time either.

6. After finishing that initial round of salty lemon water then one can

walk nearby for a minute or two– either in the fresh air or indoors.

7. Plus you can gently stretch the upper body by raising the arms on the

inhale and then exhaling and gently bending to the side. And repeat by

bending to the opposite direction. This gently helps to hasten the

cleansing process.

8. Then as soon as one feels ready to again drink, then the next round of

lemon salt water should be taken. Note: It is important not to wait too

long in between rounds. As soon as the stomach feels comfortable one should

again drink.

9. And like this multiple rounds should be done of drinking lemon salt

water and then walking slowly. This process should be repeated until one

feels the need to go to the toilet. And overall upwards of 2-3 litres of

lemon salt water can be ingested in this way. (Note: But under no

circumstances should solid food be taken yet. Rather this will wreak havoc

on the system as fresh food will be sitting on top of waste material. So no

food should be taken at all until the entire system gets clear.)

10. By this process of drinking round after around, a strong urge will come

to go to the toilet– within 1/2 hour to one hour, depending. And initially

when in the toilet a very strong smelling brown waste matter will be

released. And thereafter progressively more and more liquids will be

released via the rectum. This will also be brown at the beginning. But one

should not worry that they have been stricken with a severe case of

diarrhea. It is not like that. Rather this is the initial stage of cleaning

out the digestive track.

11. Once one has begun the process of defecating & clearing the stomach and

bowels. Then you can switch over from drinking a salty mixture and instead

begin taking pure fresh water without any salt. This fresh water will help

hydrate the body and will also aid in the cleansing process.

12. In this process of cleaning one might have to visit the toilet anywhere

between 3-5 times, or more. And one important thing to remember is that

never should the urge be suppressed and “held in”. Rather as soon as the

impulse comes one should go straight to the toilet.

The waste material will go from brown and somewhat solid to being yellowish and

liquidy until finally being a completely clear liquid. And once completely clear

liquid comes then in this case one can feel assured that indeed the entire digestive

track has become clean– including the intestines, colon, and stomach. Everything has

become perfectly clean.

14. And by this entire process of cleansing a very light and healthy

feeling will consume the body. And one will fell very happy, fresh, and

energetic.

15. Within ten to fifteen minutes a slight feeling of hunger will come. And

at that point one can eat 2-3 ripe bananas, depending on the size. But the

bananas should be soft and ripe– not green and hard.

16. And then after taking a few bananas– and do be careful not to overeat

and fill the stomach completely– then after waiting 25 minutes it is

important to again drink some fresh water. This will help in digesting the

banana.

17. And thereafter when stronger hunger comes one should take some easily

digestible food– like well-hydrated rice and vegetables, or whatever is

conveniently available in your area or locale. But neither strong food like

citrus fruit nor heavily spiced or oily food should be taken. These should

be avoided and instead more simple food should be eaten.

18. And throughout the day care should be taken to continue to drink fresh

water in small amounts, but not at the same time as eating. This will help

ensure the solid food gets digested properly and it will also keep the body

hydrated.

Attention: One should also keep in mind that breaking fast is a highly

individualized thing. Everyone should be gentle and listen to their own

body when undergoing this entire process.

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

“Tumi a’ma’y hrdaya ma’jhe eso go priyo madhurata’ ma’khi…” (P.S. 747)

Purport:

Baba, please come in my heart and saturate my entire being with the

showering of Your sweetness, O’ my dear most.

Baba please remove my all impurities and negative samskaras– and

whatever other things I have that got accumulated over the ages. Please

inundate my entire existence with the showering of Your love and divine

grace. Baba, this entire universe, these seven lokas, nothing is beyond Your

reach. Everything is within You. And because everything resides in You,

that is why You know all my merits and demerits– whatever I have. By Your

Grace today I am surrendering whatever that is mine unto You. With the only

desire that You please look towards me with Your compassionate eye, eyes

full of karuna’. This wee-bit of grace I long from You.

Baba, since ages, since many lives, I have been crossing through the

negative path, path of dogma. But today by Your grace, this is the first

time in my entire life when You awakened my samvit and now I understood my

mistakes. And I rectified them by Your grace.

Baba, all my actions, my entire being, my whole heart, everything I

offer at Your lotus feet. I do not want to keep anything as my own from

henceforth onward. With this pointed mind I am doing sastaunga pranam to

You. Please accept it…

ROOT LANGUAGES

Baba says, “When a swift horse runs its hooves make a turtur sound. That

which makes a turtur sound as it moves is called turaga or turaunga or

turaungama (that is, “horse”). That animal which makes a kurkur sound as it

runs is called kuraga or kuraunga or kuraungama (that is, “deer”). In this

way human beings have created many word forms and verb forms to express

their mental ideas. This process of word formation is called “acoustic

derivation” and the original verbal roots in all the world’s languages were

created in this way.”

“The first word forms in all the world’s languages were the original

verbal roots. By adding prefixes and suffixes many different words were

derived. Among the established languages of the world, mainly four can be

considered as the root languages. They are Vedic, Latin, Hebrew and old

Chinese. If one examines the derivation of the vocabulary of these

languages one will find that their method or process is identical. (Varn’a

Vijina’na, Disc 19, p. 270)

== FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH, PART II ==

“A STEP-BY-STEP METHOD”

Namaskar,

As we know fasting is one special process for achieving and maintaining

optimum health. As Ananda Margiis, we have all realised, to some or more

degree, the various positive effects of fasting. And the initial mail on

this topic touched on some of these universal benefits such as ridding the

body of toxins, increased longevity, and enhanced quality of life etc.

Those points I collected from various family acaryas.

Certainly then fasting is a unique purification process and one most

significant aspect of this practice is the approach to breaking the fast.

So this mail will focus primarily on a gentle yet thorough system which was

told be senior sadhakas by which one can break the fast. Since we all have

experience in this, it will also be interesting to hear what others have to

say.

HOW THE BODY IS AT THE END OF THE FAST

Of course one important thing to be aware of is that by doing a 24-36 hour

dry fast– i.e. without water– then the body obviously becomes dehydrated.

Hence the body is in a very delicate and sensitive state. In that case, if

one breaks the fast in an abrasive or hasty manner then not only will they

be unable to derive the many benefits of the fast but it will create harm

to the body.

THE NEED FOR WATER

So one key point to keep in mind is that after a dry fast sufficient water

is needed to properly restore the body and help it reach that pristine

state. As we all know water is an indispensable part of the functioning of

the body and since the human body itself is comprised mostly of water,

naturally then an adequate amount of water must be taken. And multiple

reasons are there behind this.

First off, after fasting there remains undigested food & waste material

sitting in colon as well as in the large and small intestines. Often enough

this waste matter is collected on the linings of the intestine, thus

causing blockage. So on the one hand sufficient water is needed in order to

deliver a proper and thorough cleansing of the intestines– as well as the

entire digestive track. This is one point.

It is similar to if your kitchen floor gets dirty or stained and if you try

to clean it with only a few drops of water, that will never suffice. In

that case it will not get clean. Whereas if sufficient water is applied

then that floor can be properly cleaned– and it will regain its shine.

Now here is another point.

Additionally, it is well known that water is one of basic ingredients for

the functioning of all the organs. Thus after fasting a sufficient amount

must be taken to compensate for the deficit. Plus, as discussed, water is

needed in order to clean the waste from the body. So on both these

accounts, and for other reasons as well, the body needs an adequate amount

of water on the morning of breaking fast.

A FEW POINTS OF AWARENESS

Before getting into the specifics of breaking fast, it should be mentioned

that one, two, or even three glasses of water is not nearly enough for the

breaking process. In their ignorance, some people might drink 1-2 glasses

of water and then immediately start eating varieties of foods etc, but that

way of doing is totally off base and should never be done.

Rather on breaking fast morning first the digestive system should be

cleaned thoroughly– from top to bottom– with water. And when that has

been done completely, then solid food can be taken, but not beforehand.

18. And throughout the day care should be taken to continue to drink fresh

water in small amounts, but not at the same time as eating. This will help

ensure the solid food gets digested properly and it will also keep the body

hydrated.

TAKING PROPER CARE

One should also keep in mind that breaking fast is a highly individualized

thing. And one should be gentle and listen to one’s own body when

undergoing this entire process.

So altogether, this is one very important and a delicate subject; it needs

personal interest and proper care to see what is good and working well for

you.

BABA’S BLESSING

I can never forget how in one general darshan, Baba has given the guideline

that although animals know how to fast, only humans know how to break their

fast properly. And those who are not aware about this technique then they

should be taught at the earliest. In that way Baba spoke

ANOTHER BABA’S BLESSING

Baba says, “When you are in a mood of pleasure, you should distribute it

throughout the universe– let all the hearts of the entire created universe

dance in ecstasy. This is the goal of the day: you are for all, you are for

the Neo-Humanistic progress of the entire universe.” (AFPS-5)

Namaskar,

Mahesh

Note 1: A FEW MORE POINTS COMING

In a follow-up email some further points about this important topic of

fasting, healthy, and wellness will be sent. At the same time others should

also share their insights and experiences

Note 2: FASTING ON PLANET EARTH AND BEYOND

We know that our AM system of fasting is based upon the cycle or phases of

the moon. Yet Baba also guides us that when human beings move to other

planets then accordingly the system of fasting will be based on that

planetary system etc.

PRABHAT SAMGIITA

“A’loya bhara’ toma’r dhara’ saba’r tare, saba’r tare,

A’sa’ hetha’y toma’r krpa’y, toma’ri ka’j kariba’re…” (4767)

Purport:

Baba, by Your grace, everyone comes on this earth to do Your work.

Everyone has come here to chant Your holy name. Baba, this earth, Your

land, is filled with Your divine effulgence. It is for everyone; it is for

everyone. Baba, since eternity You have been my Dearmost. Baba whatever way You

want to keep me in Your shelter, I accept– whether that be in tears or

smiles. Whatever You like, You give; that will be best for me. And from my

side, those things which I have lovingly prepared with my full heart to

offer (arghya*) at Your lotus feet, please accept them.

Baba, You were mine and You will be mine up to eternity; I am also

Yours– forever, trika’l*. Baba, in this universe we all dance around You

by Your grace. Baba, You are the focal point; in the end everyone will

finally merge into You.

Baba, Your world is for all– for all. Your shelter is for all…

ASTERISK NOTES (*)

*Trika’l= The prefix ‘tri’ means ‘three’; and the stem ‘ka’l’ means

‘time’. Hence trika’l refers to the three phases of time: Past, present,

and future.

*Arghya= The term arghya means ‘offering’ though more specifically it

refers to that offering which is purely psychic or mental in nature– the

offerings of the mind. In contrast to offer those things which are physical

in nature is nirma’ly. Hence in the above song since the term arghya is

used, the sadhaka is offering all his mental colours and longings at the

lotus feet of Guru. The sadhaka is offering all the love of his heart to

his Lord. Thus the devotee’s offering is purely psychic or psycho-spiritual

in nature. Whereas the offering done to various gods and goddesses in the

dogmatic religions is called nirma’ly since on those occasions those

followers are offering physical objects like food, incense, animals etc.

Baba has outlined this distinct difference between arghya and nirma’ly in a

few different discourses.

*********************************************

Present Day Music

Baba says, “The world of music today is like a person without a proper guru

or proper training. People want to show they can play without having paid

their dues. They are selling themselves for gold without realizing that the

real value of music is being lost thereby. Gold is becoming even cheaper

than glass. Whenever a ra’gin’ii is a little difficult they only show that

they can play the notes without going deep into the music. There is no way

of doing this with sindhubhaeravii, the same with mu’lta’nii vasanta (not

vasantaba’ha’r), so you no longer hear either one of them.” (SC-2, p.129)

Purport:

Baba, by surrendering all the colours of my mind– all the attractions and
attachments of my mind– by surrendering everything to You, I want to move
on and on, by Your grace. Baba, I want to offer all my colours, desires,
and longings at Your alter. My only desire is to move on the path, dancing
according to Your rhythm, Your melody. But somehow always I am losing its

Baba, by Your grace, I am holding Your flag in my hand. You have given

teachings. You have instilled the feeling within me that even if no one
else is coming along, still I will go on marching ahead on Your path. Baba
Your grace is ever-showering on my entire existence. Baba, You are always

Baba, I was never alone in the past nor will I be alone in the future.
By Your grace You are always along with me. And when You are along with me,
then there is no question of fear. Baba, by doing Your work and singing
Your song, I will go on moving on Your path of effulgence– keeping You in
my heart. Baba You are always with me, You are eternally sweet and

== FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH ==

Namaskar,
As we all know, fasting, or upava’sa, is one of the significant and
important gifts which Baba has graciously bestowed upon us for maintaining
human health and leading a spiritual life. This entire letter discusses
numerous aspects of the practice of fasting– including the all-important
point & practical method of how to break fast.

Here following are many of the topics contained in this entire subject:

Universal and Natural Law ~ Animal Existence vs Human Life ~ Nature’s
Perfect Remedy: Fasting ~ Animals follow Natural Law, Human Eat Mostly out
of Greed ~ Fasting for Health: A Purifcation Process ~ AM’s Approach to
Fasting ~ Fasting and Longevity ~ Humans Know How to Break ~ System of
Breaking ~ Wrong Breaking Invites Harm ~ Water Needed for Digestion & Whole
Body System ~ Work of the Small and Large Intestine ~ Proper Cleaning
Necessary ~ Use of Lemon Water ~ ‘Rounds’ for Breaking ~ Individual Needs ~
Gentle Process ~ Maintain Prama when Breaking ~ Warning and Guidelines ~
Stages of Cleaning ~ What and When to Eat ~ Taking Banana ~ Baba’s Special
Blessing ~ Baba’s Complete System ~ Proper Interest and Care Needed ~
Optimal Health ~ Suggestions from Others ~ Healthy and Happy in All the
Realms.

A WELL-ORDERED UNIVERSE

Parama Purusa has created this world in a well-balanced way. And within
this creation there is both animal existence and human life, with a unique
difference separating the two.

Animals are fully bound by natural law. They have no option but to strictly
adhere to the rules of prakrti; whereas human beings have been given
freedom or dominion to make choices and exercise their will, within a
certain degree.

Yet nature itself has been made in such a perfect way that animals always
advance and benefit from following natural law. In that sense animals are
comparatively more fit and healthy than common human beings because animals
are forced to follow nature’s ways, while humans have some scope to go
against natural law, should they desire. And this whole equation, with
regards to animal life and human life, is especially true with regards to
food and fasting.

FASTING: A NATURAL LAW

For example, when an animal gets sick, then in their natural way they
refrain from taking food until they regain their health. And this
refraining from ingesting food– or fasting– is the very tool by which
animals heal themselves and recover from their sickness. So animals do not
eat food for taste per se, but as a means of survival and recovery
according to the dictates or laws of nature.

So Parama Purusa has created this beautiful universe in such a way that
everything goes on according to natural law. And within all this one system
is there that if the body is not functioning properly then to cure oneself
one special method is there known as fasting.

HOW HUMANS DO– IMPROPER AS WELL AS PROPER

However humans are not bound by natural law, and in this materialistic era
especially, common persons eat food excessively out of greed. When they see
food, they like to eat it– whether it suits them or not.

But those human beings who are sensitive and following the codes of yogic
life then they develop an inner sense of when to take food and when not. So
when the body is sick then they do not like to eat food. And that is the
natural system to cleanse the body, enhance its functioning and make it
perfect and pure. And for thousands of years yogis have been following this
approach.

So by fasting, toxins and waste are removed; and the body is given
opportunity to recover and ultimately reach to a higher state of
functioning and wellness.

FASTING IN OUR MARGA

Hence in our AM yogic style of living, Baba has given the system of fasting
whereby He directs us to observe ekadashii fasting. And some also fast on
purnima and amavasya as well. And in both cases, whether 2 or 4 times per
month, fasting creates a beneficial effect on the entire body.

And by following this system of regular fasting the body gets conditioned
to it. And then just before the next ekadashii arrives one can internally
feel that another fasting is needed.

But those who do not do fasting are deprived of the unique health benefits
and instead their health breaks down and diseases crop up and their
health problems get multiplied.

So in the end they have no choice but to submit themselves to a local
doctor and begin the process of taking medicine on a regular basis.
So Baba has given fasting as part of Sixteen Points and Baba has also said
that by following 16 Points one will increase the length– and quality– of
their life. So there is a big difference between those who follow Sixteen
Points and those who do not. Those strictly following points like fasting
will get an extra 15, 20, or even 30 years of quality living. Thus, for
optimal health fasting is needed.

ONE FINAL DIFFERENCE

So in their own ways, both animals and proper human beings do fasting. But
one vast difference exists between the two on this topic. And that is that
animals do not know how to properly break their fast whereas humans have
been given the technique.

And it is by breaking fast properly that the body is able to maximize the
benefits of the fast. Unfortunately some are not aware how to break fast.
Here the letter is getting long and the hour is late so this topic of how
to break fast shall be taken up and emphasized in the very near future.
Along with that these other points will also be raised:

~ System of Breaking ~ Wrong Breaking Invites Harm ~ Water Needed for
Digestion & Whole Body System ~ Work of the Small and Large Intestine ~
Proper Cleaning Necessary ~ Use of Lemon Water ~ ‘Rounds’ for Breaking ~
Individual Needs ~ Gentle Process ~ Maintain Prama when Breaking ~ Warning
and Guidelines ~ Stages of Cleaning ~ What and When to Eat ~ Taking Banana
~ Baba’s Special Blessing ~ Baba’s Complete System ~ Proper Interest and
Care Needed ~  Optimal Health ~ Suggestions from Others ~ Healthy and Happy
in All the Realms.

GREAT SIGNIFICANCE OF FASTING

Baba has included fasting as its own exclusive point in Sixteen Points.

Baba says, “Observe fast as prescribed.” (Point no. 8 of 16 Points)

And in His supreme ‘Secrets for a Long Life’, Baba lists fasting as its own
entry.

Baba says, “Fasting at Intervals.” (Point no. 5, ‘Secrets Long Life’)

And furthermore in Yogic Treatment pointedly remarks how fasting helps
restore the body to it balanced and natural condition.

Baba says, “During fasting the body’s organs get a good rest,
and the healing process is more rapid.” (YT, p.95)

Namaskar,
Mahesh

Value of Nation

Baba says, “Preach the theory of one spiritual inheritance– that every
living being is the child of the Supreme Entity and that all the people of
the world belong to the same family. This will have to be explained to
all– that there will be a clash between different nations so long as the
feeing of nationalism exists.” (PNS-4, p. 45)

Subject: Baba’s Procedural Order About Sadhana

Baba

“Sakal duya’r khule dile prabhu, Va’ta’yan-pathe a’lo elo…” (P.S. 2429)

Purport:

Baba, by Your grace You have come and opened all the doors and windows,
and a huge effulgence has started pouring in. From the eastern horizon
the crimson dawn is visible. The darkness is fast fading away.

Baba, in the past there was a domination of dogma and groupism all
around. Countless superstitions and negative samskaras were doing their
naked dance. But now, with the presence of Your divine effulgence, in
the blink of an eye those dogmas and negative things have disappeared.
And the  beings of darkness have dissolved into thin air. I do not know
where  they have gone– just they disappeared.

Baba, with Your love and punishment You are keeping everyone in Your
shelter. O’ Baba, You are caring for everyone…

== BABA’S PROCEDURAL ORDER ABOUT SADHANA ==

Namaskar,
We all know Baba places great emphasis on our sadhana practice as it is
only by properly doing sadhana that we can grow from crude animality to
human, and from human to ideal human being, and from ideal human to divine.

Just as an illiterate person can become a doctor, professor, or
a lawyer through proper schooling and education.

Similarly…

Sadhana wholly transforms one’s mind, body, and consciousness. The whole
personality gets changed by proper sadhana. That is why our Guru has
given a huge importance to doing sadhana.

Unfortunately many of us haven’t been able to realise this basic fact in
our practical life. As long as we have not realised the depth of
sadhana, we should go on doing our meditation with utmost sincerity. Let
us not forget that sadhana is a scientific process and by right effort a
result must come.

And not only must we practice sadhana, but we must tell those who are
obsessed with materialism as well. They must understand that materialism
is not everything. This truth must be understood by all.

For all these reasons, sadhana is very important and here is Baba’s
Procedural Order on sadhana.

—-
“STANDARD OF SADHANA”

“(A) 4 Times Sadhana: Doing sadhana 4 times daily is compulsory for all
wholetime workers. It will be the duty of all wt workers to maintain the
record of their 4 time sadhana routine in their compulsory daily diary.
All trade heads are also hereby instructed to see very particularly the
sadhana routine of each and every individual worker of their concerning
trade. Trade heads must check whether their workers do sadhana 4 times a
day or not. DPS will be directly responsible for implementing this
system very strictly. DPS is also to create his own method for
collecting information every month regarding workers of different trades
who do not or did not perform sadhana as per system in a particular
month. Such names are to be recorded and immediate steps to be taken by
the DPS against the concerning workers and the supervisory worker of
that trade. A monthly statement regarding the irregularities in 4 times
sadhana by the workers of different trades and disciplinary steps taken
by the DPS against the worker must be submitted to the higher authority
every month.”

“General Margiis: Doing sadhana 2 times daily is compulsory for all
margiis in general. DPS is to keep candour eye through his RDPS and DDPS
on each and every margii regarding their performance of individual
sadhana 2 times a day. Any slackness in this respect is to be pointed
out by the concerning RDPS and DDPS to the margiis concerned and the
margii is to be made to understand that by not doing sadhana he is
committing sin and that he must be very very strict in 2 times sadhana.
RPDS and DDPS are to keep a regular record of the margiis of their
respective areas regarding two times sadhana. DPS must keep a regular
watch on the records.”

“B) Asana and Ekadashii: In order to help in regularity and improvement
in sadhana, every worker will have to follow very strictly the rules of
asanas (daily compulsory) and ekadashii and they will maintain this
record in their daily diary. The DPS will keep very close watch on this
and necessary steps must be immediately taken.”

“C) In order to improve the sadhana of the WT workers and increase their
attachment to it, the 7th lesson (Sahaj Pranayama) may be made available
for practice to maximum wt workers. This will immediately increase their
inclination towards sadhana.”

(Procedural Order on Sadhana as given by Baba)
—-

Most senior Wts have this above Procedural Order but they do not like
share with their junior wts and margiis, otherwise those seniors
themselves will be pointed out for not following this order.

BABA’S BLESSING

By Baba’s grace He has blessed us with this great sadhana practice of
Ananda Marga and we should realise this quest in our daily life.

Baba says, “The worship of Brahma should be done scrupulously, or else
you will later regret and bemoan the futility of your life with the last
drop of your tears at your last hour. You should make your life
worthwhile through your sa’dhana’. How much can your worldly friends and
relations do for you? After your death your relatives may perhaps ask,
“How much money has he left behind?” Your friends may go to the
crematorium and indulge in flattering reminiscences about you. Your
husband or wife may cry for you for about ten or twelve days and then
regain their normal composure. Your lot will be only a profound sigh – a
record of the futility and frustration of your life. So do not waste
your time lest you later have to repent…That is why I say that you
will have to dedicate yourselves to His feet wholly and unreservedly.
You will earn godliness in proportion to the extent that you surrender
yourselves, and finally, after merging that acquired godliness of yours
in His Entity, you will attain eternal bliss.” (SS-3)

Subject: How You Can Save Money

Baba

“Phuler ha’site chile, manoma’jhe a’ji ele…” (P.S. 1898)

Purport:

Baba, You came in my mind today and You were smiling like a magnificent
flower blossom. You know that I love You even then why do You remain
distant. Baba, I do not call anyone other than You. In my mind, nothing
else has any place; You are my Goal. You are my everything. And I do not
think about anything else besides You. In spite of all these things, why
do You remain forgetful about my existence. Baba, I understand this
heart-breaking and difficult liila of Yours. You take my mind and play
Your painful game of hide and seek. Sometimes You make me laugh; and
sometimes You make me dance; and sometimes You make me float in the
tears. Baba, after a long time You have graced me and come in my mind
today…

== HOW YOU CAN SAVE MONEY ==

Namaskar,
In this day and age, people waste a lot of time trying to earn more and
more money – laboring anywhere from 8 – 10 hours daily, or even 18 hours
in a single day.

Plus most people are totally worried about money – so they think about
earning money even when they are not working. They eat, sleep, and dream
about it.

In this way their entire psyche and days are consumed.

The general psychology is to earn more and spend more. That becomes
their entire life – that is the unfortunate truth. The tragedy is that
this human life is about so much more than just collecting money. Human
life is far larger than this.

To resolve this critical issue, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji has given
a beautiful way of living that is very easy for everyone to do. And by
following His guidelines, you are sure to save huge amounts of money.

So if you are suffering from any sort of financial worry or fiscal need,
then read this following letter.

THIS LETTER IS FOR EVERYONE

The guidelines in this letter are for everyone. If you are already an
Ananda Margii or a sympathizer of the Marga, you will readily see how
much you are saving by following AM practices. Plus you may get some new
tips as well.

And if you are not yet an Ananda Margii, then by reading the below you
will get a clear-cut vision how following our AM way of life will
benefit you financially.

Hence this letter is for absolutely anyone and everyone who wishes to
save money and live a financially secure life.

NO INTOXICANTS (Part 1)

In Ananda Marga, as we all know, or as new people will soon learn, we do
not use any intoxicants – none. This is the first great way of saving
money by leading life as an Ananda Margii.

Cigarettes, beer, wine, and hard alcohol are all getting taxed verily
heavily by the city, state, provincial and federal government. So the
prices of these substances is skyrocketing.

Indeed just this past month the tax on cigarettes in NY state went up
$1.60 to a total of $4.35 on taxes alone, so a pack of cigarettes now
costs $9.20 (on average) in NY. Smoking a pack a day over the course of
a year would add up to more than $3,650.00. And this type of increase is
happening everywhere. The same thing is going on with regards to alcohol.

Since in Ananda Marga we have no interest in or use for cigarettes, or
any of these other legal intoxicants like alcohol etc, we are saving a
huge amount of money. Just ask any ex-smoker or ex-drinker and they will
most assuredly tell you about all the money they are saving by quitting
their dirty habit.

NO INTOXICANTS (Part 2)

Then of course there are the illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine,
heroine etc. These all cost a huge amount of money – it is big business
– but for Ananda Margiis this is a non-issue entirely. Hence big $aving$.

Included in this topic are other health costs and legal fees. If one is
using intoxicants of any kind they will certainly have to spend more
money on doctors fees, health concerns, insurance premiums, hospital
care and other medications etc, since those intoxicants will ruin their
health.

In addition, drinking and driving is illegal so if one gets caught by
the police they will incur big legal fees in order to clear their name
and stay out of jail, if possible. Same is the case if they are caught
using illegal drugs. Not only are the drugs expensive and addicting, but
one have to spend huge money on attorney fees to clear their name in a
court of law.

So from multiple angles, our clean way of living that is free of any and
all intoxicants saves us a lot of money. That is the first great savings
for being an Ananda Margii.

FOOD

Our style of eating, i.e. our vegetarian diet, is also a big money
saver. In most places, fresh fruit and vegetables are far less costly
than meat – both on our wallet and our health. Our daily or weekly
shopping is less expensive plus we will not face all the health issues
that hinders meat-eaters. So we will not have to pay those big medical
bills either.

Various studies show how eating home-prepared vegetarian meals foods is
cheaper (and healthier!) than a meat-based diet. Also always look into
buying foods in bulk – one can save huge money this way.

There is much more involved in this point of food, but I think most of
us are aware about them. And already there is a lot of information out
there about the extreme financial and health costs of a meat-based diet.

The only further point that is worth raising on the point of food is
that as Ananda Margiis we do not dine in restaurants or hotels. Of
course the reason we do not do this is because those places are not
sentient: The dishes themselves are dirty, the ingredients are unknown,
and the cooks are non-sadhakas. So that is why we do not dine in such
establishments. But, on the top, eating in these restaurants is an
expensive habit. By not frequenting such restaurants we save a lot of
money. What average people spend on a single meal in a restaurant is
enough funds for wise, vegetarian shoppers to eat for 1 or 2 weeks at home.

GAMBLING

So much of the world indulges in gambling – either in casinos, or
on-line, or at sporting events, or in lotteries, etc. The tragedy with
gambling is the the “house” always wins. People waste their time and
hard-earned money and come home empty handed. Not only do they lose
their money, but they lose their mental balance as well as gambling is
an addition. People go so far as to sell their most valued possessions
in order to support their gambling habit. Indeed, even the great King
Yudhisthira lost his entire wealth and property in a game of dice. Such
are the ill effects of gaming and gambling.

Our Ananda Marga does not allow for this at all.

Baba says, “The habit of making wagers is extremely undesirable. You
must avoid lotteries and gambling.” (CC-2, Society, pt#38)

When there is no gambling then there is no question of losing money or
wasting away one’s time. This is an absolute money-saver.

LOANS

In our present era, this is a big, big point. So many people around the
world, especially in the materialistic western nations, make it a hobby
or even career in life to spend money which they do not have.

People incur debt by taking big loans to pay for things that they cannot
afford: clothes, fancy meals, i-Phones, sports cars, gadgets, and so
much more. By this way they lose money in two ways: Firstly by
purchasing a costly item which they do not really need; secondly by
having to pay the interest on the loan for that item. Hence it is a
double loss.

Yet all “modern economies” around the globe are based on this faulty
precept. Not only do individuals and families indulge in this, but
entire cities, counties, states and even whole nations embark on this
defective manner of taking loans to pay for things they cannot afford.

From beginning to end this is a totally costly and mentally taxing
affair. People stay awake at night wondering and worrying about how they
are going to pay back their loan. And countries like Greece go totally
bankrupt.

In Ananda Marga, Baba is entirely against the idea of taking a loan or
incurring debt for superfluous items.

Baba says, “To purchase, by incurring debt, serge where tweed will do,
or gaberdine where serge will do, is surely against the principle of
aparigraha.” (GHC)

Indeed the entire spirit of aparigraha is to live in a simple manner,
within one’s means. This is only possible if one can to cultivate the
requisite santosa (mental ease), such that a person will not senselessly
run after material goods. As Baba points out in many discourses, the
practices of aparigraha and santosa are closely linked.

Baba says, “Human desire knows no end. Millionaires want to become
multimillionaires, because they are not satisfied with their million.
Ask the millionaires if they are happy with their money. They will say,
“Where is the money? I am somehow pulling on.” This answer indicates
their ignorance of aparigraha. But such feelings have another adverse
effect on body and mind.”

Here Baba continues His discourse.

Baba says, “Out of excessive fondness for physical or mental pleasures
people become mad to earn money and amass wealth. As money becomes the
be-all and end-all of life, the mind gets crudified. Constant hankering
after money results in negligence of one’s health, and this makes the
body unfit. Therefore, santos’a sa’dhana’ lies in being contented with
the earnings of normal labour, without any undue pressure on the body
and mind. To remain contented, one has to make a special type of mental
effort to keep aloof from external allurements.” (GHC)

Hence by following yama and niyama and doing sadhana, one can easily
become adept at the points of aparigraha and santosa. And this will lead
to saving so much money – huge amounts.

Because without aparigraha and santosa, one will become a prisoner to
the consumer mentality of “buy this” & “buy that” which is so infested
within capitalism.

Hence this topic of loans in highly linked without our mental state and
yama and niyama. When the mind is balanced one will steer clear of all
kinds of unneeded purchases as well as unnecessary loans, thereby saving
tremendous amounts of money.

OTHER WAYS OF SAVING MONEY

BY FOLLOWING OUR AM WAY OF LIFE

Here is a brief list of other ways any sadhaka of the Marga will
certainly save money. Again, anyone can follow this approach and get the
financial benefits. I invite others to comment and elaborate on these
below points.

– Fasting: By fasting 2 or 4 times monthly, we save 1 – 2 months worth
of food over the course of the entire year. Plus fasting purifies the
body and keeps us disease-free, and away from expensive medical visits.

– Marriage: In some traditions huge money or dowries are paid to get
one’s children married. We do not subscribe to such dogmas. Our social
ceremonies are free.

– Tiirtha / Pilgrimage: Traveling to so-called holy lands like Mecca,
Jerusalem or Varanasi each year is an expensive proposition. In AM, we
do not have such destinations – the only tiirtha in AM is Guru cakra.

– Birth & Death: Here again these entail social ceremonies that do not
cost any money in AM, whereas in the dogmatic churches and temples,
moderate to large sums of money need to be paid. Plus without a large
payment, one will not even find a spot in the cemetery or get a good
casket, whereas in AM the body is burned at no expense to the deceased
or their family.

– Hobbies: In AM, our only hobby is social service and helping others
whereas in the so-called first-world nations average citizens spend
enormous amounts of money on hobbies and recreational activities. Thus
we save a lot in this department as well.

– Psychic Disease: Sadhana keeps the mind balanced and without sadhana
people encounter so many mental problems: frustration, depression,
angst, phobias etc. In that case they have to spend huge money on
psychiatrists and psychologists.

– Inferiority Complex: Anyone with an inferiority is bound to be
exploited. Sadhana will free the mind from such complexes.

– Religious Taxes: In most of the religions, the tax for the average
member is 10% or so of their total income. In Ananda Marga it is only
2%. Thus we save 8%.

And there are a multitude of other ways in which we save money. Everyone
should write in with their experience of how they save money by being an
Ananda Margii

BABA’S BLESSING

By Baba’s grace He has given us the perfect system for living in this
era of economic struggle and strife. By following His life principles we
are bound to save large sums of money and feel relaxed about our
financial picture.

So if anyone is suffering from economic turmoil, just become an Ananda
Margii or redouble one’s efforts in following 16 Pts. Then one will be
worry-free and unencumbered by economic problems.

Let us remember that human life is short and it is meant for sadhana,
not getting caught up in financial concerns.

Baba says, “One should not forget that human life is short. From the
moment of birth one slowly and steadily advances towards death with
every passing second. This short period of time from birth to death is
human life. Human beings have come from the world of invisibility and at
the end of this short span of time will return to the world of
invisibility. Those people can be called intelligent who utilize every
moment of their short life engaged in spiritual practice.” (APH-4)

Namaskar,
Jagatmitra

Note 1: BABA’S SPECIAL ORDER ABOUT LOANS

Here furthermore is another of Baba’s special guideline about taking loans.

Baba says, “I am also giving one more advice in regard to aparigraha. If
any Margis have to spend on anything in addition to the fixed
expenditure (for example, expensive clothing, ornaments, articles of
furniture, marriage, building, etc.), they should, before incurring such
expenditure, obtain a clear order from their a’ca’rya, unit secretary or
district secretary, or any other person of responsible rank. Similarly,
permission is to be obtained before taking loan from any businessman or
money-lender.” (GHC)

Note 2: GOOD FOR ONE AND ALL

In this materialistic era, the mass of people weigh most of their
decisions on money. People want to know what is most economical. This
plays into our favour as this entire letter aims to show the innumerable
ways how living life as an Ananda Margii is the best bank for your buck.
So this is a good pracara strategy: Save money by becoming an Ananda
Margii.

In addition, challenging or severe economic times are mounting, so as
Ananda Margiis we need not worry so much since in a multitude of ways
our way of life is the most economical. It is a better deal fiscally.

By the above listing of points, it is easy to see how and why our AM
ways of life is great in all realms of life, including financially.

Subject: Sixteen Points in Personal Life

Baba

PS Intro: Here Baba is describing what happens in the severe summer
season. It can also be equated with bad or difficult times in one’s
spiritual life. When the sadhaka is feeling out of their devotional flow
then the mind is dry like a desert. The softness and fulfillment of the
mind withers away. Everything becomes drab and lifeless. The sadhaka’s
heart of that dark time is reflected in this song. Here summer season
means that state of mind devoid of devotion.

Purport:

The nectar of the mango grove has dried up. The vernal breeze has gotten
lost in the horizon. The nectar of the mango grove has dried up.

The burning heat of summer makes the cuckoo bird forget its song. It has
stopped singing. In the greenless flute groves [1], there is no resonance. Not
seeing the monsoon clouds, the peacock is half-dead and lifeless. The
unbloomed flower buds have withered away in summer’s scorching heat. The
nectar of the mango grove has dried up.

Because of the intense summer heat, the green grass has become yellow –
as if it is facing a terrible ordeal. Whatever suppressed and painful
feeling was in the heart became one with the hot desert storm. The
nectar of the mango grove has dried up…

NOTES FOR PRABHAT SAMGIITA #3003

[1] The flute is made from the cane plant, that is why cane plants are
also known as flute groves.

End Note: One key point to be aware of in this ongoing translation work
is the danger of being overly literal. For instance, in Bengali it is
said, “jal kha’bo” literally meaning “Will eat water”; whereas the
better translation is “I will drink water.” Whenever and wherever
possible, a good translation will aim for the spirit of what is being
said, and not the bare, literal meaning.

== SIXTEEN POINTS IN PERSONAL LIFE ==

Namaskar,
Here are some of our personal experiences my family and margii friends have
had regarding our Sixteen Points and related guidelines on hygiene.

EACH POINT HAS DEEP VALUE

Our Sixteen Points, as we all know, stand as Baba’s precise guidelines for
how to advance on the path of spirituality. So for us, each and every point
has immense value and great significance. Because there are potentially
millions of rules and regulations in our human life, yet Baba has
beautifully selected the most important ones to be included in our Sixteen
Points. So we are certainly blessed.

Even then it remains challenging for us to follow them all.

Perhaps the points outlined below are easy for you, in which case you can
help by offering tips and solutions. But to date, these below points have
been difficult for my family (wife and three children) and / or margiis in
my unit to follow.

TWICE DAILY PRACTICE OF ASANAS

We know our yoga postures or asanas are important, but this point remains
difficult for us. Because after doing sadhana in the morning often we are
in a hurry to go to work. And likewise in the evening after doing sadhana
we are hungry from the long day and want to have something to eat. So
getting asanas done twice daily is not an easy job– at least in our
household.

Please excuse me, but I notice that some others in our unit also have that
same difficulty. Because often at dharmacakra all of us skip asanas before
taking food. And in general we have an open relationship with all the
margiis in our area and we always talk about what things are difficult for
us to maintain. And most agree that doing asanas regularly is difficult.
Side by side, some of us only do our dances on dharmacakra days– and never
any other time. So this is another problem. Yet all of these things are
included in Sixteen Points. And ultimately I enjoy doing them when it
happens, but on a daily basis I remain incomplete in my approach.

For instance, on the point of asanas, sometimes I think that since I did
them in the morning then I can skip in evening. And other days I think I
can skip in the morning because I will do them in the evening. All these
types of justifications get built up in my mind.

Of course the reality is that when I skip one time then the tendency is to
skip again the next time.

Whereas on those days when I do attend to my asana practice in full then
invariably I feel better. Though I have not yet reached the point where I
do both my asanas sessions using a stop-watch so that I can properly time
each asana. This was recommended to me by two different family acaryas. And
I can certainly see now it would be beneficial– but to date I have not
incorporated this practice, hopefully soon.

FINGERNAILS: CUT SHORT AND NEAT AND CLEAN

Baba is very strict, as we know, on personal hygiene and about cleanliness
of the hand and fingernails etc.

This point about keeping the fingernails neat and clean is one of Baba’s
health guidelines. Perhaps you might think this point is an easy one, but
with our children we face nothing but struggle.

Because our kids attend the local public school and at school many of the
children like to keep their finger nails long, even the boys. And by this
way a deep dark line of dirt forms underneath each nail. And even days go
by and still the children will have this line of dirt underneath their
nails. It becomes like one permanent design there. Even with the older kids
this is a problem.

And with these very same dirty fingers and nails the children eat their
food and touch one another. Altogether it is unhygienic.

And oddly enough, here in the west it is not limited to children alone. In
my daily travels I come across various non-margii adults who also have dark
lines of dirt underneath their nails. Even when I was in the doctor’s
office the other day, then the doctor himself had some nails that were
caked with dirt. The whole scene is so ironic. Because the doctor’s office
itself is quite clean and sterile looking but underneath the doctor’s
fingernails there is a dark collection of dust and dirt.

As I recall this type of thing is not so much of a problem in India and
some other countries. But in Berlin, NY, and GT sectors, I have seen– and
others have commented as well– that keeping long, dirty fingernails is not
uncommon. But I have heard that regular asanas and fasting are challenging
for those in Delhi sector as well. But those living there can best comment
on this.

Back to the point of unkept fingernails, unfortunately this trend has taken
with my children as well. Ultimately my wife and I struggle and trim the
children’s nails and clean out the dirt. So to some degree the problem is
addressed, but not entirely as we want the children to cultivate the habit
of keeping their hands, fingers, and nails clean on their own.

NO NAIL BITING

Along a similar theme, Baba has given this related guideline:

“Do not put your fingers in your mouth and take them out repeatedly,
and never cut your fingernails with your teeth.”
(‘Social Norms’, pt #23)

This also has been a challenge as many of our children’s friends are
constantly chewing on the ends of their fingernails. So this also our
youngest child has begun to emulate.

And once again this unhygienic habit of nail biting is not limited up to
children. There are two colleagues in my workplace who are submerged in
this unhealthy problem also. In general, this does not seem to be an issue
with most margiis though.

SOME OTHER AREAS OF DIFFICULTY

There are a variety of other aspect of 16 Points that can be difficult to
follow as well such as (1) regular fasting and (2) proper use of water. My
wife and I are mostly adjusted with both of these points whereas we have
had less success with the children. And other margiis have expressed
similar concerns.

And still there are some margiis who hold dharmacakra in their house yet
fail to have a shaocamanjusa in the bathroom, just there is toilet paper.
This leads us all to think that this family also is not habituated to the
proper use of water.

So these are some of the points that challenge us in our daily living. No
doubt if I thought more then more points would come. But at present this is
all I have time to write so I will stop here.

Others should write in with their contributions as well. Because the more
we recognise areas that need improvement and the more we can inspire one
another, then the better off we all will be.

BABA’S BLESSING

By Baba’s grace, through 16 Points our capacities can increase thousands of
times. And Baba says below, Sixteen Points is our right exercise.

Baba says, “There should also be proper exercise for mental development and
spiritual elevation – one should not neglect the mind or the soul. What is
the best way to strengthen the mind? The best and proper way is to strictly
observe the 16 Points. The more rigidly you follow the 16 Points, the more
your mental strength will increase. It will increase so much that it will
be more powerful than the collective mental strength of 100,000 people. In
a psychic clash they will have to concede victory to you. A person who is
physically strong can fight against eight, ten or twenty people at most,
but no more than that. A psychically developed person, however, is able to
fight against many more people. So you must endeavour to develop your
psychic strength – this is your bounden duty. The more rigidly you follow
the 16 Points, the more psychic strength you will acquire. It will not take
you long. The only way to develop spiritual strength is to surrender
everything to Him – the more you surrender yourself to Him, the more you
will develop your soul. Such development will lead to not only 10,000
people surrendering before you, but the entire universe. This is right
exercise. Exercise is necessary, not only in the physical sphere, but also
in the psychic and spiritual spheres.” (AV-7)

Namaskar,
Divyajyoti

Note: ANOTHER BENEFIT

Here is another benefit of Sixteen Points.

Baba says, “Of course, if you follow Sixteen Points, your longevity will be
greater.” (AV-5)

Stages of Human Life

Note 1: Here following are the Sanskrit terms demarcating the various
stages of human life. Accompanying them are corollary English terms.
However since the English language does not formally divide human life
in the exact systematic way as in Sanskrit, then everyone should give
their further suggestions for how to best express the English counterpart.

Note 2: Baba has formed these categories of life based upon changes that
come as a result of changes in: age, psychological outlook, physical &
psychic development, etc.

Baba says, “Human life is composed various stages. And the collection of
all the stages encompasses the entire human life. And just as human
beings have these ten stages, similarly the life of each and every
living being is composed of these ten stages. So depending upon the type
of living being and environmental conditions such as climate and
temperature etc, the duration of each of these stages varies, either
increasing or decreasing. Following are the stages of life for a human
being living in a tropical country.”

1) Ma’trgarbha: anuma’nika 10 ma’s (Mother’s Womb; approx 10 months)

2) Shaeshav: 0 to 5 (Infancy)

3) Balyaka’l: 5 to 14 (Childhood)

4) Kaeshora: 14 to 16 (Youth)

5) Paogan’d’a: 16 to 18 (Teenage / Adolescence)

6) Yauban: 18 to 39 (Early adult life)

7) Praor’hatva: 39 to 50 (Middle age)

8) Ba’rdhakya: 50 to 72 (Older adult life / senior citizen)

9) Jara’: 72 to 100 (Elderly)

10) Atharva: 100 + (Centenarian)

(Laghu Nirukta p.349)

Note 3: Ma’trgarbha: In Varna Vicitra part 1, Baba comments that the
duration of this first stage is ideally 10 months & 10 days. That is how
long the fetus remains inside the womb, in the best of circumstances. If
however, the fetus is born before this time, then the new born will not
be properly mature. In that case its physical and mental development has
not occurred up to the optimal degree. This stands as yet another proof
how human life begins in the mother’s womb and therefore the act
of abortion is not accepted in A’nanda Ma’rga.

Note 4: Jara’ means those whose bodies has begun shrinking. (Stage 9)

Note 5: Atharava means those who are almost immobile. (Stage 10)

Note 6: Due to the excess in-take of protein and fat and due to
chemicals in the food, the age of puberty in so-called developed
countries is rapidly decreasing. Now some young girls reach puberty at
the tender age of 8 and some boys begin puberty at the age of 9. The
extremely early onset of adolescence is the result of terrible
imbalances in lifestyle and ultimately this creates serious problems in
the society. Because suddenly 10 year old girls are getting pregnant and
producing their own babies, yet they themselves are still young children
and completely unable to take care of their offspring. This is the
tragedy unfolding in various so-called developed countries.

Note 7: This entire cycle of life is the divine liila of Parama Purusa.
A baby is born and blooms up to its full development and then gradually
it shrinks in its old age. This is the divine play of “Hari & Hara”.
That is why this world is called Jagat– because everything is mobile.
Everything is changing; nothing is stationary. Those who have come will
one day go. Those who have gone, they have gone in order to return
again. This infinite liila of Parama Purusa is going on from
beginninglessness up to eternity. In reality, this liila is miserable
for jinanis; but for bhaktas it is blissful. In this cosmic liila
everyone has their own particular role to play. And those who remember
that they are part of a divine drama, they enjoy; and those who forget,
they cry. But in the real sense everything is blissful because everyone
is dancing around Parama Purusa.

Baba

“Toma’re ceyechi a’lo-chay’aya’…” (PS 2373)

Purport:

Baba, I long for You in the light and shade – in good days and bad – in
the dawn as well as in the evening. I long for You always, each and
every moment. Baba, I long for You in the effulgence of the earth – the
beauty of creation. I have untold yearning for You in dormant love and
in the depths of ideation – in my dhya’na. O’ my Beloved, I want You.

Baba, my Dearmost and my eternal companion, You are the great ocean of
churned nectar. You are eternal. Everyone exists because of You in newer
and newer rhythm, names, and forms. Because of You this cycle of
creation keeps moving.

Baba, please come very close and reside in my heart, grace me by
dispelling the last vestige of asmita’ [1]. Along the flow of my life’s
path – through the undulating waves of crest and troughs – the river of
my citta wants Your essence of nectar. Baba in the journey of my life,
in pain and pleasure, loss and gain, happiness and sorrow, my heart
wants only You, O’ my Dearmost…

NOTES FOR PRABHAT SAMGIITA #2373:

[1] Asmita’: Here below Baba gives quite an elaborate and colourful
explanation of the Sanskrit term, asmita’.

Drkdarshanashaktyoreka’tmateva’smita’

Baba says, “As asmita’ is devoid of any discrimination, people with this
mental defect lose their power of discrimination. First, they think that
since they are so great, there is no need for them to learn anything
from others. As a result of this, their further progress comes to a
halt. Secondly, the arrogant attitude of this asmita’ banishes from
their minds the humble psychology of the learner. They lose interest in
learning anything useful; so not only in the world of knowledge, but
also in the world of practicality, they become misfits in life because
of their mountainous accumulated ignorance.”

“It is not that arrogance of this sort simply obstructs their progress.
The human mind, like the human body, is dynamic. No one has come to
remain here; everyone is moving — for movement is a must. Now, the mind
whose further progress is blocked will also have to move this way or
that; so when one must move, but the path of progress is blocked, one is
compelled to move along the path of degradation. Thus the arrogance born
of this asmita’ will lead people towards their downfall.” (NSS,
‘Shivokti-6’)

NEWS FOR WTS

Note: Be sure to scroll down to the very bottom to read the piece, “News
for Wts”.

Namaskar,
Around the globe, the average citizen is more health conscious than ever
before. People are trying to eat right, exercise regularly, and engage
in health supportive activities. Plus medical science continues to
advance – in all kinds of ways including surgeries to replace organs.
This is all a very positive development for humanity.

Even then, one stark problem has multiplied. The incidence of brain
related diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and dementia is on
the rise in the so-called developed world. Then their are other like
multiple sclerosis etc.

This then presents a seemingly puzzling perspective: People are more
health conscious than ever before yet suffering more from brain related
diseases.

Why is that and what is the solution. Can any of our AM practices
correct this situation?

THE HORROR OF BRAIN-RELATED DISEASES

Brain related diseases are some of the scariest conditions on earth.
Such patients may have strong bones, good teeth, excellent mobility, but
their brain has become diseased. In that case – with people living
longer than ever – they may pass the final 15, 20 or even 30 years of
their life in a desperate and pitiful state.

It happens in two basic ways. Sometimes the brain disease may render
that person as 100% incapacitated in the psychic realm. They do not know
their name nor who they are. And they live like that for decades. They
have a body that works but their brain is defunct. This happens with
Alzheimer’s disease and other brain disorders.

Then there is a second group of brain diseases which severely compromise
the use and function of one’s motor organs, in which case one quickly
becomes physically incapacitated. One becomes wheelchair bound
(possibly), loses control of their bowel movements, and cannot manage
their life on a day-to-day basis. Is it a really miserable situation.
This is what happens in Parkinson’s disease.

In either case, brain related diseases put one in a terrible predicament
and impose a huge stress on the family.

Because once one gets consumed by a brain related disease like
Alzheimer’s etc, then one loses all kinds of psychic faculties. They
became mere skeletons of who they once were. Those suffering in this way
cannot recognise their own family members, perform basic tasks, nor
recall how they spent their life or who they are. They become totally
handicapped – a burden to their family. Indeed, they have zero control
of their emotion and tempers: the patients torture their family.

No one wants to end up like this. Yet it is occurring more and more:

– Health conscious living is quite high in the US. People run, bike,
swim, take yoga classes, and so much more yet the greatest incidence of
Parkinson’s is in USA.

– The prevalence of Alzheimer’s is expected to increase to 11.3 – 16
million cases in America by 2050

– As we speak, the incidence of dementia in the US is 368,320 per year,
30,693 per month, 7,083 per week, 1,009 per day, 42 per hour, and growing.

Here the point is that despite efforts for people to live in a more
healthy manner – vegan, organic foods, exercise, asanas etc – there has
been an increase in brain related diseases.

Then there is the aspect of non-healthy people. They are living longer
due to all kinds of organ transplants (liver, kidney, heart etc) but
they too are more susceptible to brain diseases. Because while the other
parts of the body can be replaced, the brain cannot.

Everything in this world ages: The brain also gets old and science does
not have any answer. There is no such thing as a brain transplant. That
would change the entire human personality. It cannot be done. The brain
is linked with the mind and is associated with a certain set of
samskaras. Changing the brain means changing the person.

The overall perspective is that brain related diseases are quite
debilitating and awful. They should be averted at all cost.

Can you think of anyone who wants to live a long life wherein one the
entire mid to later years are dominated by brain diseases.

AND THE ANSWER IS…

When this has become such a horrifying and tragic outcome that is only
growing, what is it that we can do to help both ourselves and society.

And the answer is: Ananda Marga dances.

Baba has given dances that will prevent brain ailments for the whole
humanity. Baba has re-introduced the tandava dance and created
kaoshikii. Both serve the brain.

Baba says, “Ta’n’d’ava – which was not invented by me, but by Sada’shiva
some seven thousand years ago – is an all-corporal exercise, an exercise
for the entire body, including the brain. (There are intellectual
exercises for the brain, but hardly any physical exercise. In fact,
ta’n’d’ava is the only physical exercise for the brain.) And among all
dances it is the best. But it is not for women.” (AV-6)

Baba says, “I invented kaos’ikii on September 6th [1978]. This dance is
both an exercise, and a medicine for twenty-two diseases. It is a sort
of panacea for almost all female diseases, and for many male diseases in
younger boys. It is a medicine for most liver diseases. It assures safe
deliveries for women, and also checks the advent of old age. It is a
medicine.” (AV-6)

By practicing tandava and kaoshikii, one can minimize the aging of the
brain and increase its stamina and vitality. That means even if humans
are living longer, the brain will maintain its integrity and proper
functioning for one’s entire life. That is the big boon these dances
offer. One will be saved from the nasty effects of brain related diseases.

Here Baba explains more how tandava keeps one mentally sharp.

Baba says, “Now, all dances do not equally exercise all glands, and
there are some glands which are not at all influenced by dances. In the
absence of the proper exercise of those glands, people lose many
capacities at an early age – especially the capacities of deep thinking
and of sustained recollection – and there is no process for restoring
them. Considering all this, Shiva invented a unique and perfect dance:
ta’n’d’ava.” (NSS)

As Baba says, once those mental faculties are lost, “there is no process
for restoring them”. Thus the dances of Ananda Marga serve a special
function.

Here below Baba discuss the all-around benefits of kaoshikii and He
furthermore describes how the dance helps the brain by vibrating the
mind in the psycho-spiritual plane.

Baba says, “It is found that human beings are sometimes affected by
various diseases; and frequently they are faced with various
difficulties with respect to their sa’dhana’. These impediments many or
may not be major. For instance, small diseases like liver trouble may
cause problems from time to time, and to remove these types of
hindrances, I invented the kaoshikii dance on the 6th of September 1978.
This dance serves as an antidote to twenty-two types of diseases. All
these are primarily meant to first of all vibrate the ectoplasmic stuff
(citta’nu) which in turn is concentrated at a certain point touching the
point of the soul, where Parama Purus’a resides.” (AFPS-3)

From top to bottom, our AM dances are a great panacea and a special
practice for preventing brain diseases. By doing these dances daily, one
will have an acute capacity to think and remember throughout their
entire life.

These days many in the general public are practicing yoga to benefit
their health, but only those who know and practices these dances can
truly exercise the brain, thereby preserving its health.

We should propagate these dances to the maximum and save people from the
dreadful defects and debility of brain diseases.

HOW TO PRACTICE

Of course, like everything else in yoga, we can only get the benefits of
AM dances by practicing them. Knowing or reading about them is not enough.

Both kaoshikii and tandava are meant to be done twice daily, vigorously.
That means not just 30 seconds but rather multiple rounds of several
minutes each. The heart should be pumping strong. Kaoshikii can be done
for as long as 15 or even 20 minutes non-stop. Baba Himself created
dance competitions so we would learn to practice for longer periods.
Then we can get the benefit.

If one just does the dances lazily just to say they did it, then they
will not get the benefit and they will not be protected from those
horrifying brain diseases.

Here is one special tip about the practice of tandava.

Baba says, “As long as a dancer remains above the ground, he derives
much benefit; when he touches the ground, then those benefits are
assimilated by the body. That is why in ta’n’d’ava there is much
jumping, because jumping requires the practitioner to remain off the
ground for a fairly long period of time.” (NSS)

BRAIN CANNOT BE REPLACED – OTHER ORGANS CAN

Remember, human life is getting longer and longer. All kinds of
operations can be performed to save the skin, lungs, heart, ankles,
thyroid, liver, pancreas, appendix, teeth, tongue, hips, knees, eyes,
nose etc. The public spends huge money and resources on both cosmetic
and involuntary surgeries. The longer they live the more surgeries are
needed. But one thing is sure: There is no surgery to replace the brain.
Replacing the brain means changing the human persona entirely.

The only way to exercise and strengthen the brain is through our AM
dances. No one should be lazy or remiss in this regard.

Life should not only be long, but it should be healthy with a strong
body and a sound mind. Who wants to live a long life wherein they lose
all their psychic and / or physical faculties due to complications with
the brain. Nobody.

We should all be vigilant to practice our dances and encourage
others to do the same.

BABA’S BLESSING

By Baba’s grace, He has given all the teachings and dances for a
healthy, long, and successful life. We should be ever active in
practicing and propagating them.

Namaskar,
Ramendu

Note 1: MORE ABOUT THESE DANCES

Baba says, “Hands placed at 90° indicate the strength of the arms of the
dancer. Ta’n’d’ava expresses the spirit of strength and vigour. They are
straight, meaning thereby that they are ready to fight death. One hand,
holding a skull or fire or a snake, represents death, while the other
hand is holding a dagger, represent the spirit to fight death.” (May 22
1979, Hannover)

Baba says, “Kaos’ikii: The two hands when upraised and folded together
represent, “Now I am trying to establish a link with Parama Purus’a.”
Both hands bending to the right indicate, “I know the right way to
request You.” The bending of the body should be at a 45° angular
projection. The leftward movement represents, “I know how to fulfill
Your demands.” The movement of bending in front suggests complete
surrender. The backward bending represents, “I am ready to face all
troubles that may come,” The last ta’, ta’ represents, “O Lord, I repeat
Your rhythm.” “(May 22 1979, Hannover)

~ NEWS FOR WTS ~

These days a maximum number of workers have ATM cards and bank accounts.
Many seniors are involved in planing about their financial future and
they encourage junior workers to also keep ATM cards, i.e. black money.
Then there are some workers who are attending college / university
instead of helping society. That is the news in a nutshell. Here is more
about it.

When people first become Wts they are quite idealistic and their
intentions are pure. But very quickly they get negative training from
their elders. They see senior Dadas keeping hoards of black money and
personal houses for their personal retirement.

In that case, those young workers get enticed and that negative endeavor
of gathering black money spreads. This is the terribly unfortunate
trend. More and more are keeping black money (i.e. unaccounted funds).
And they do not inform anyone how much they have. Just they stockpile
their private back accounts.

Then when we see Wts getting degrees from colleges and universities we
know they are preparing a cushion for old age or getting ready to do
work on the side right now. They do not do pracar but instead work in a
call center or computer software firm.

Some crude people will think, “What is wrong, this is alright, everyone
in society does like this.”

The response is, “You do not touch the feet of your non-margii neighbors
but do offer respect to your to our acaryas because they are dedicated
to AM ideals and neo-humanism. Plus they follow WT conduct rules and
sacrifice their lives for the betterment of society. That is why we pay
our respects.

So if any worker does not follow the acarya conduct rules, keeps black
money, and / or finds employment in some mundane company, or joins a
college or university, then what is special about their existence –
rather it is hypocrisy.

Just as the like general public expects their leaders to prove
themselves and follow certain codes, in the same way we Ananda Margiis
want our Wt post holders to follow a certain code of discipline. The
code of conduct as given by Guru.

Those involved in keeping black money are hypocrites and they create the
situation where good wts get looked at suspiciously. If any Wt starts
thinking about money their mind is degenerated and they will lose the
inspiration to do pracar. It means they have forgotten the essence of
being a Wt.

They take their shelter under money, not Baba. In that case how can they
help others. Theirs is the path of self-destruction. They should be
forced to mend their ways or get exposed so others understand what is
their true color.

Why do such workers keep money hidden, i.e. black money? Because they
know that if margiis come to know that they (the worker) has more money
than margiis, then those workers will not get more donations. They will
not be able to increase their acct. They have money but always ask for
more.

They live in hypocrisy and that ruins their sadhana and
straight-thinking. Instead they become crooked, selfish, greedy and
degenerated – and ultimately they leave. Such workers are nothing but a
burden to AM and a disgrace of what it means to be an acarya.

They should be prepared to face the consequences as prakrti will not
tolerate such duplicity from our dedicated workers.
